Just saying greetings to all. I'm not unfamiliar with gerbils but, haven't had any since my children were small. Now I have my own gerbil, name of Mocha. He's too cute but, hasn't been tamed at all. He's terribly frightened of me and I'm none too patient. Need to relearn how to handle these critters!! LOL Oh well, I'm not worried. I just have to get used to thinking about havning a pet that NEEDS attention and treat him like a baby till we get better aquainted.
Nice to finally find a real gerble forum Had help from another forum where they only have mice and rats as topics of discussion. I joined anyway! So here I am because on of their members found this place for me. Such nice people. ;D

Hello Gerbette and welcome to the forum!
I'm just wondering why you only have one gerbil? They are very social creatures and are happier when kept in pairs. You can get another male if you don't want them to breed. How long have you had him? If you've had him for a while, he could be stressed/depressed/lonely etc and that could him more difficult to tame, although I'm sure it can still be done! How old is Mocha? Do you have any photos? Hope you enjoy your time here anyway!

Hi and welcome Gerbette! I'm actually pretty new here myself. I am "mom" to two gerbils named Cloud and Storm (we lost Snuggles last week and Storm is new). We also have a dog and two tanks of fish. Glad to have you around.

I wish I could have two but, I've heard it isn't good to put gerbils together unless they are from the same litter. Is that really true or what? How do you think you put a male and female breeding pair together then! lol There are links on this site that show you how to do the split cage method. This is the best and safest way to introduce two gerbils. I would seriously recommend you get a mate for Mocha, he will be a happier gerbil if you do! Since it's been so long since you had gerbils and have said yourself that you are basically learning all over again, I would suggest you get another male gerbil. If you get a female and they mate they can have pups roughly every 5 weeks. You should a pup under 10 weeks old, that way, if Mocha is a bit older he won't see the new male as a threat. I hope this helps a bit! Feel free to ask more questions Floppy

Here's the link to the split-caging information. www.petermaas.nl/gerbils/english.htmI've found that introducing males is *very* easy. If you get a young pup (5-8 weeks) you can often put the two together without the split cage. My 6 month old male accepted 3 male pups with no problems at all. Good luck, and ask more questions if you still have them!

i think this in the wrong forum? anyway, welcome. the people at the pet store probably said that to cover their backs. if someone came back after unsuccessfully introducing gerbils from different litters and they had an injured/dead gerbil on their hands because the pet store employees said it was okay, the people at the pet store would get in serious trouble.

it's not really lying. it is difficult to introduce them and there are occasions where it doesn't work.
