I'm new here, so maybe this has been covered before, but I was wondering, in your experience, what is the general life span of a gerbil? I keep reading 3 to 5 years, but I wanted to ask people about their personal experience in this matter...

Yes, the normal life span is 3-5 years except if the gerbil is sick or for some reason dies early.

Generally in the wild, the life span of a gerbils is 2 years. As domestic pets, the life span is about 3 years. I have heard of some gerbils living up to 5-6 years. pogomom, Thanks for your question. Have you thought of becoming a member? It is a great way to give and recieve experiences and information!! Welcome!

I have now one gerbil of 4,5 years old, and one of 3,5 years old. The rest is younger!

I have a two-year old gerbil who is still very active and seems in perfect health, she is a bit grey on her face and tail and a bit chubby.

I feel like a bad gerbil mom now. I think my 2 prior gerbils only lived to be about 2 years old (although I wasn't certain of their ages when I got them). I currently have 4 gerbils - one is about a year and a half old and the other three were born this past June.

I have also had gerbils that died at an age of 1,5, or 2. And some of 3 etc. It depends on the gerbil, their genetics, if she breeds or not, etc. So even if you take care of them very well, it is possible that they die young.

Peter, do you mean they live longer if you breed them? Or rather die younger? That is interesting either way. Pogo, Think about humans, some die really young no mater how healthy they eat or are. You are not a bad mom. Besides a lot of gerbils you got were full grown and may have been 1-2 when you got them

In my experience the males live longer than the females. We had one male that lived for 5 years.
