Hey there, I finally got around to getting pictures of my coconuts!! I ate the coconut (well there is still some left), boiled the shell, then had my hubby notch a hole in it for an opening. The coconut cost $1.89 US (and tasted good) and the same shell in PetSmart cost $8.00US. I saved a bunch, ate good coconut and the little ones have something to gnaw on that will last more than 5 minutes LOL ;D Okay at least 30 minutes heeehee. Since the boys have more room in thier houses, I gave the 2- halves to the girls to play with. Now I need to eat another coconut for the boys. The things I do for my gerbils LOL. Here are some pictures:

Hmmm, maybe an idea for me! However, I don't like coconuts, so maybe I can find someone else that is willing to eat them... ;D

I tried this after seeing your post, coconuts here must be much smaller though, I ended up giving it to my chinese hamsters.

How did you cut the coconut in half? I've never eaten one before, so I don't know how to open them up.

To be honest, I did not cut it in half...... I asked my husband to do it. All I did was eat some coconut, boil the shells, and put them in the tanks! He gets the tough jobs. He cut it with a Hack saw and used a Jigsaw to cut the holes. Our Gerbils love them! I have used it to keep most of the bedding out of the sand dish and I also just put it in there to let them use it as they wish. It is funny to watch them pack them and then try to wiggle thier little bottoms in after they stuffed it with bedding!
