My gerbs are messy...and there are little nose marks on the inside of their tanks. I've tried just a damp cloth, but it doesn't do much but smear the marks. Is there anything I can use that isn't toxic to the gerbs to clean the glass? I don't really have anywhere else to put them, so I'd need something I could use with them in the cage, or in a travel carrier for a short amount of time.

Hi Heather, I use a cleaner, deodoriser and disinfectant called 'Keep it Clean',made by a company called Supreme.I think it is available from www.russelrabbit.com ,although I buy it from a local pet shop. This completely removes greasy marke caused by gerbils and fingers, with out smearing. I usually remove my gerbils before using it,but if you sprayed some onto some kitchen roll or a cloth,I think it would be o.k. to rub away any marks with out having to remove your gerbils. It is safe to use for all animals, birds and reptiles. Lydia

Yes J regular dishsoap can be ok, just never use BLEACH.. But you must make sure you throughly rinse any soap out, as it could make a gerbil poorly. we use regular dish soap every week and the disenfectant that Lydia uses once a month. Gerbils do not smell much at all though so it could easily go 2 weeks between washes - if you want stinky animals try male mice

Oh Andrea, Toffee and Spotty are very upset by your comment . Toffee and Spotty are my 2 male mice, they don't smell .I realise I've only got 2,maybe if there were more males I would notice a smell. ;D Lyd

It could just be individual to the mouse too. We used to have about 8 male mice, and they were stinky...but not near as stinky as little Cinnamon, our lone male mouse that just passed away. Cinnamon would stink up the whole room the same day I cleaned him. I think he was making up for his cuteness. He was a long haired orangy color, very cute. It's not because the gerbils stink that I want to clean the glass, it's just from their paws and noses on the glass, the dust from their sand sticks to it and there are smears on the tank. I couldn't find that cleaner at the pet stores here, so I think I'll try a little dish soap. They'll just have to suffer in the small tank for a bit while I clean. heather
