My rats LOVE to play "get the rattie." I pinch them lightly on the backs and they run around in circles and jump (like popcorn) around while I chase them like a game of tag. It's really very precious. Makes me and them very happy. I tried it with the gerbs. They run, obviously, but to be honest, I can't tell if they're scared or playing. They don't hide from me, just run around. Are there any other little games I can play with them like that? I know they enjoy playing, and I want to make sure they're happy. heather

The only game I've ever played with some of my gerbils,is a form of hide and seek. As a child,I used to let my gerb's out in my bedroom. They would run around exploring,I'd crawl around, seeing what they were getting up to.They would frisk away, but look back or stop,to check I was following. When it was time to put them back in their cage,I would mimic their drumming. They would come out,and come up to me. I haven't played this game with my latest 2 gerbils, not sure if Pallids will be so easily caught. They don't drum the same as Mongolians, don't think I'll ever be able to mimic them. Also, when they drum,it seems more of a warning than general communication, think they would flee. I don't thnik gerbils mind if if we don't play games with them.As long as they've got plenty of toys, and are handled and fussed etc I think they are happy.

I think it is great that you are trying to engage your gerbils. Perhaps a game of hide the sunflower seed?
I think that they are so inquisitive that anything different or new would be fun and stimulating. Just getting out of the cage is fun for them.
Let us know what you pick or do.

i make agility courses out of cardboard. You can persuade them to go over by showing them a sunflower seed, and they'll chase it.

Have you seen the pet fence pieces(I think it's 6 pieces of fence? They sell at Petco and Petsmart, but I got it at wal-mart for like $9.95. My gerbil loves it of course she loves the box it came in just as much:)
