Okay everyone, I have a question! I have gerbil pups for sale, and I was recently contacted by someone who can't find gerbs in his area who might be willing to pay shipping costs for me to send 2-3 to him. I live in the USA, and I was wondering if anyone else here ever ships, and if so, do you have any advice? Which airlines are best, whether you have to have a certificate of health, that sort of thing?

Shipping gerbils through the United States Postal Service is illegal at this time. There are a number of airlines that will ship gerbils, but for their safety ensure that the stringent guidelines are kept. Source: www.agsgerbils.org/Breeders.html

I live in Canada and have shipped gerbils to close destinations in Canada (1 hr flight) because cities are so far apart here. The airlines are very strict about how they are packaged and rightly so.
I packed my 3 locked plastic carrying containers (with air holes) of gerbils by giving them lots of warm bedding, celery and food, then surrounding each plastic container with wire mesh so that if they chewed out there was a second barrier. Then this was all packed in an extremely well labelled cardboard box that had crushed newspaper or shredded paper between the plastic carriers and the outside of the box to provide extra insulation since aircraft carry holds are extremely cold.
I labelled the container "live breeding stock, fragile" so that curious people wouldn't open it, they knew it was live, valuable and delicate and so there was no indication that it was rodents (some people hate them just on principle). Also careful instructions to keep the container absolutely upright were on the box.
The shipping company had full knowledge beforehand and very careful instructions from me. I would not jeopardise my gerbils, and the person I was shipping to paid an awful lot of money to have a new breeding line of gerbils and so deserve to get them in excellent condition. Everything went well.
Having said that, however, there is now a moratorium on air shipments of any kind of live animals with the company I was dealing with so it looks like my shipping days are over.

I'm not Sandy , but I checked out shipping charges for someone a while back. Delta Airlines has a service called Delta Pet First that will ship live animals in the US. The minimum charge is $153, plus a per-pound weight charge. RW

Heh.. I don't know. Something I would definitely find out before shipping though, obviously, since I'd have to know where to ship. And I wouldn't want to get in trouble for shipping illegal - however stupidly - animals.

When I was browsing websites for new pups I came across a site that said she could ship anywhere in the US for a cheap price. Turns out a few breeders used this method, know how they did? Packed the gerbils into cardboard boxes for overnight delivery(with apples, food, bedding, litter, air holes) but labeled the box "Fragile- live Lizards, keep upright". Apparently it's not illegal to ship lizards. lol, needless to say, I found a breeder that lived closer to me.
Wow, someones willing to pay a lot of money for a new pair of pups!! Did they want any specific colors?

well depending on the day shipped it cost from $55 to $85 Canadian dollars. Also it is not illegal to ship gerbils either in the US or Canada, except in California they are illegal anywhere. However, many airlines will not airship rodents because they consider it high risk.

Shipping gerbils by air isn't illegal in the US, but shipping through the US Postal Service is and, as far as I know, neither UPS nor FedEx will handle live mammals, either. I'd have to wonder about anyone who would try to ship gerbils via the Postal Service anyway. I've seen what they can do to a package and it ain't pretty. RW

I agree. Even if it was marked fragile live animal, the package would probably be bounced around and placed in such a way as to restrict ventilation. I am such a worry wart, I would not do it.

Neither would I, Not only is it unsafe for the gerbils, but also illegal, and the concequences wouldnt' be good.
