For some gerbils it is, others not! You can give them hay. They make very soft nesting materil from that. You can give toilet rolls and cardboard boxes. And branches with or without leaves. A wheel, nesting boxes, artificial tunnels /burrow, different floors, climbing items, a thick layer of sand, so that they can dig, etc.

Each of my tanks has several wooden/metal houses, tin cans with the tops off and cardboard. I cover this all with many inches of shavings, so that they have an elaborate system of tunnels. All my gerbs also get a sand bath, and most also have a wheel.

I work in a warehouse so there is always plenty of extra cardbaord laying around. Once or twice a week I bring some of it home and my gerbils just love it! They chew on that stuff all day long. ;D

I let mine out often. Also on the days I don't let them out, I shift thier tanks around and they spend much of the day "personalizing" it. If you fluff up the Aspen (since it gets really packed down sometimes) and they go crazy tunnelling around!

Hey Mafff, I don't know what you've said in your previous post, because it has been edited. English is indeed the only allowed language on proboards forums. But if can say it only in Dutch, you can also PM me (the e-mail of this forum).

i make tunnels with cardboard by folding pieces into a triangle shape and making a slot on the edge of one side and a little "T" to slide into the slot on the opposite side. Then i make some holes in different places around the middle, but not big enough for them to get through so they have to chew there and enlarge the hole. Then i pile them all on top of each other with the holes kind of matching up. They stack really nicely because of the triangle shape. Then i cover up the layers of tunnels with shavings, hay, etc. and put a little toilet tissue in the ends so they have to pull it out. They have an absolute ball running from one tunnel to another and enlarging the holes, digging out the tunnel entrances, etc. Of course, if you actually have a life (unlike me this might be a little to time consuming... I find that scattering some seeds that they like in the bedding keeps them occupied as they forage. They love ripping up brown paper bags and paper towels, cereal boxes. Also, you can get one of those huge plastic storage bins for about ten bucks and use it as a playpen connected by SAM tubes (or some other critter tubes). I just put mine up beside their usual tank with a tube going up and over to the playpen on a slight angle. They love running back and forth. Good exercise too.
