Timmy has been chasing Buddy around all day today jumping ontop on Buddy. Buddy in return, has been making squeaking noises as Timmy try to jump ontop of him. So my question is this: why is Buddy making squeaking sounds and is Timmy just marking his scent on Buddy? Timmy is the son and he is dominate one over his dad (Buddy). Should I do anything? I feel silly for asking this........

Sounds like he's just telling his dad "Hey I'm the boss around here!". I have my males (heck even some of my females) marking there cagemates, specially if i have removed one of them for some one on one play time.
I think everything should be ok, this is a natural behaviour, but also I woudl keep an eye on this behaviour to make sure it doesn't escalade, which i don't think it wpuld being they are to males who are related.

Well, it appears that everything seems fine between Timmy and Buddy as I write this.
I thought that's what that meant he was doing. But I just wanted to be sure.
Thanks for replying back to me.

Cinnycinnamon, just from now on, watch them closely. This sort of behaviour can sometimes escalate, so just keep an eye on it.

Hey Cinny,
I hope everything is going fine now. Please keep us posted. I have not noticed that behaior except when mom & pups are out. Mom will run all over the pups marking them.

Yeah, things were quiet in Buddy nad Timmy's house on Tuesday when I last posted. Yesterday though, Timmy was all over Buddy again-even in the playground. This evening, it's pretty quiet again in their home. I was thinking that if this behavior doesn't stop soon, that I might hafta split the tank or something. And Buddy is thee nicest gerbie, too. Why would something like this happen? Does Timmy want total dominance over Buddy? I don't get it. I will keep you posted.................. Thank you Queenofthenile and Sweetie for your replies. As always, it's very much appreciated.

My boy's usually do this when they are in teh play pen (where other gerbils have been) or when one has come out of the tank to play and the other hasn't. It's like he's seeing "who are you... oh your "MY" Brother" and marking him. My gerbils are over a year old and have so far never had a problem. I think they do this mostly because they know there are other gerbils around.. girl gerbils.

Well, it seems that Timmy is still "marking" Buddy and chasing Buddy around the tank to do so. And I had/have been careful about letting my two girl gerbies out at the same time when I let Timmy and Buddy out to play either in the plastic ball or in the playpen. And for a while, Timmy was okay. But as of yesterday and today, Timmy has been all over Buddy so much so, that I can hear Buddy squeakin. The first time I heard the squeak, I instantly got up and hissed into the tank. I dunno what made me do that, but Timmy immediately got off Buddy and ran away. Buddy just stayed in place and looked at me as if to say thank you. Buddy is one of my tamest, calmest gerbils. He's also the father of Timmy. What should I do if this behavior persists? Thanx in advance for any advice!

I suppose this post really should be moved over to the "behavior" board, huh? I just read Ritzie's post about boy mounting boy. Sorry about that.

How close to your girls' tank are your boys? It could be that the chasing/mounting/marking is being brought on by the smell of the girls in heat. Female gerbils go into heat about every 4-6 days. You might try moving the boys' tank farther away from the girls to see if that helps calm them down.

Hi RW! Thanx for your reply and possible solution. I will immediatly move their tank to see if that helps any. Right now, they are on the bottom shelf and the girls tank is also on the bottom shelf. Buddy and Timmy's tank is the 20 gallon high. Peaches and Sally's tank is right next to theirs. I will move their tank to the top........maybe I should instead just move Peaches and Sally's house??? I will keep you posted........*crosses fingers this works*

Hey Cinny,
How is it going? Is Timmy still mounting Buddy?
Momma Bear does that to her pups when they are out in the playpen. She is in a different territory with different smells and tries to mark her pups by rubbing them. She does not however do this in her tank.
It seems that it might me a scent thing from the girls. You changed the houseing around and how is it working?

Hi Sweetie! It's going okay I suppose. I may have strep, so I have not handled my gerbils today. Yeah, I'm really beginning to think this has to deal alot with my females. But the thing is, yesterday I did not let them out. And while I was sitting here at my computer, I could hear Buddy sqeakin. So I turned around and looked and sure enough, Timmy was chasing Buddy around the tank tryin to get ontop of him. So maybe I need to move the girls tanks further away from where they are currently?? But I don't have another spot for them to be at. This is how it is currently set up- Buddy and Timmy's tank is in the closet on the top shelf (20 gallon high), while Peaches and Sally's tank is on the bottom shelf-the one with the Zesta crackers box in it. I dunno what else to do. Timmy doesn't always act this way, either so it must be caused by the girl's goin into heat?? Ya think?
