I don't really want to get two gerbils. If I do get two does that mean that I have to double the bedding amount ,food amount , water amount , and size amount? What is the smallest amount of space you can have for 2? would a 10 gallon tank work? Please Help Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! edited: to remove the caps.

First of all.. Get rid of caps please. A lonely gerbil is not acceptable. A 10 gallon tank for 2 gerbils is good. It does not mean double the bedding, food, etc. Gerbils are low cost animals that don't cost much. If you buy stuff in bulk it will be much cheaper.

i think a 10 gallon will work fine. when i use to breed (which i don't anymore) , i kept my breeders in a 15 gallon only because that gave them enough room for space and accomodations. but i use to keep non-breeding gerbils in 10 gallons all the time. i once had 4 males in a 10 gallon. but i did only think it fair to them that i try to get them out of the terrarium everyday. but if all you want is to get 2 gerbils for a 10 gallon, then i really believe you have nothing to worry about. i personally think a 10 gallon is big enough. and if all you are getting is two, then again i think there will be no problem with the space issue. they'll be fine.

Of course you need 2 gerbils, they are social animals that benefit from each others company. Occasionaly, you may get a pair who fall out,but this is very rare if they are litter brothers or sisters. As to cost,if the thought that 2 may be too expensive, then your finances need to be healthier before buying them. Two really are not more expensive than 1,the only thing that is double is the food.Gerbil food is very cheap,or,as Ryan suggests, buy it in bulk.

Why don't you want to get two gerbils? You use the same amount of bedding in a 10 gallon tank whether you have one gerbil in it or two. Yes, the water they drink is doubled, but they both drink from the same water bottle, so it's not a problem. Yes, the food is doubled, but gerbils don't eat very much anyway. A 10-gallon tank is adequate for two gerbils, so that's not a problem, either. Most gerbils really are happier with a friend and, if you start out with two, you're all set. Keeping two gerbils together doesn't mean that they won't be friendly toward you. In fact, gerbils kept by themselves can be more timid and nervous, making them harder to tame.

Having a lone gerbil is crule, having a lone Syreine (sp) hamster is ok. Having a gerbil who has killed it's tank mates and has been a problem when trying to re-introduce to another gerbil by it's self is ok. I've had one of those gerbils, she was a rescue and had to be kept by herself, so if your stuck on having one, find someone with a troubled gerbil and adopt it. Otherwise please get two, gerbils are just not happy by themselves, and no matter how much attention you give it you will NEVER be another gerbil to him/her.
If i could keep ALL my gerbils together I would, having pairs and groups is so much more fun then one loney (depressed) gerbil, watching them interact with one another is great!

I had Keebler for 2 1/2 months before I got his girlfriend. He did just fine. HOWEVER, I had him out MANY times EVERY day, and he was packed all over the house. That was also before I got a job, so literally most of my time was spent with him since my b/f has school all day and work after that.
Now I have FOUR adult gerbils, a litter of 6 (soon to be a month old) and a 3rd litter on it's way. Keebler is happy with gerbil friends, and I'm super glad that he has them, because now I have a job, and a life with HUMANS! ;D If I still had the countless hours to spend with him, then I'm sure he'd be fine, but now Keebler won't even play by himself anymore. He HAS to have another gerbil in the play area with him, otherwise he just wants to climb out onto me! (Begg for a friend for your gerbil, or get a hamster!)

Gerbil2003 , I was just wondering how many gallons is your tank? It looks rather small to me. I might be just thinking it looks small, but I would like to know. If you want to tell me at school that's fine too.
