I was wondering what you could put under a play pen to make sure the gerbil's ''waste'' dosn't get on the carpet, my dad wants to know. I suggested a towel or a plastic pag, but he says that the pee sould soak through and get in the carpet. I told him it probably wouldn't, but he didn't listen to me.Any ideas? Ecoa

We use a cheap vinyl tablecloth under the exercise pen to protect the carpet. After playtime, we just wipe it clean and fold it up until next time.

we use a large sheet of cardboard or we geta large cardbpard box like what tvs come in or somethings and then we cut it and open it out so its big enough to cover the area.

You can also use Puppy Pads. They're like a diaper that you lay on the floor for potty training your pup, or if you have an old dog that's "gotta go when ya gotta go." Plus, if the gerbils do dig it a little, it's non toxic and safe. IT's lined so it won't leak!

Hi Ecoa,
I use an old bedsheet folded in quarters. The pee does not soak through. You could also put the pen on linoleum if you have any in your house then make sure you use a bleach solution afterwards.

I'm so glad somebody asked this question! I've been wondering the same thing as I'm not in a hurry to lose my flat deposit because of a gerbil stained carpet! I'm really struggling to get a play pen though, over they past three days I've been to petshops in Bath, Essex and Kent trying to get one, only to be met with blank looks from pet shop owners. I wanted my gerbils to have it as an Easter present.

I just use a sheet and cardboard box. Make the box flat by cutting one of the sides, then bring it all around into an encolsure. Then put an old sheet on the floor so they wont soil the carpet.

I vaccum it all up .. lol I actually put a towel down first. There litle dropping can be then dumped off the towel and into the trash. Also the tiny bit of urine they may leave behind is so small it dosn't soak into anything, and i don't have any stains either.

This is pretty ture about the pee. I just toss a towel down, and it's fine, but I don't have the play pen anymore. I gave it back to the people I got it for because Keebler ALWAYS got out of it, no matter how many toys I put in there for him, and I was tired of trying to put an old window on top of it. It was easier just to hold him. However, that was when I only had him and Ritzie, but now I've got 7 boys! I sorta wish I still had it! Either put it on lynolem or something similar, and mop it up later with a Swiffer or something, paper towel with 409? Or use an older towel and just wash it after a few times. Just shake it outside!

I think putting them in the (dry) bathtub to play is way easier.

I just vacuum the carpet, gerbil droppings and urine just aren't very noticable. -Jeremiah
