I got a small animal pen from ebay.
My new girls have been in it a couple of times and love it - it's one of those made of 6 wire panels. and it's big enough so I can put the cage inside the pen for easier escape-free getting them in and out of the pen moments!
pics to follow.
It seems better than cardboard boxes, because they don't try and jump out of them as much - I was a bit concerned that 10" would be easily jumped, but they haven't really tried yet!

Yes, I have little jumpers in one of my clans, but the complete opposite in the other one.

Yeah trust me, they will get out at some point and once they do, they won't stop! My boys were fine the first three times they went in there, the Harrison figured out that he could jump over the fence and now all he does try to figure out ways to escape. I've got two play pens and we've cable tied them together on top of each other, they can still climb up the sides but it gives me time to get round and pick him off. Hendrix on the other hand is fine! Although he gets very upset when he gets put back in the tank because Harrisons escaped.

Same here I`m afraid. I purchase two of those multi-coloured `hamster` runs 23cm high off an ebay shop seller. After being in this run now four or five times, I have Berti climbing over, followed by Barney, then Dibble, then Grub! Last night I ended up with four young, boisterous gerbils on my knee, rather than inside the pen! They also play on my single bed and dart in and out of the duvet! I now have a duvet cover with air holes! (or chewed holes to put it bluntly!). I`ve also sat on the bed and spotted a small kangaroo hop past my feet on the bedroom floor hoping mummy would`nt notice! My floor is secure so very safe for escapee`s! If I do get any on the loose, I let them have a good run around and then use one of the hamster runs to block off the room and the gerbil hops into a cardboard box, gets re-captured and popped either back onto the bed with the others, or back into the tank! They are fabulous little pets and you get so much fun and love from them as a group. I get climbed all over!

As I'm still trying to tame them both, I find everybody (gerbils and myself) are more relaxed in the playpen than just on the floor and they have to come and interact with me when they're in the pen, they just run and hide when they're in the tank. Problem is that because they're not tame, when they do escape it's a nightmare getting them back!

"when they do escape it's a nightmare getting them back!"
I know - I had that the other night - ash escaped and it took about 10 minutes to get her back!
although it's handy the playpen being big enough to house the cage for stress free "gettting em back in the cage"
(Note - I do hav e a tank, but whilst I finish off the furnishings they're n a cage)

I used to have a playpen like that. Mine climbed out. (Daisy stood on her hind legs and Dixie climbed up on top of Daisy, then she grabbed on to the top and pulled herself up, jumped off to the other side, and left poor, confused, Daisy in the pen. But then she stood up on her food bowl, and hopped out. I had a big time trying to get them back in. The very next day I returned it to the store. BTW, that was the 1st day I had had it.) OH well, BYE!

So yes, I also bought a playpen for my gerbils. They all loved it, but Cocoa is such a crazy thing, he's like all hopping out and trying to run around the whole place. *sigh* Butter and Cloud don't try to get out though -Jeremiah

i have one of those too and my gerbils always try and escape. Molly can just jump straight out but Misty has to climb out so usually i manage to stop him Even the babies they had could get out by the time they were 4 weeks lol ;D
