Went to the local pet store today to buy some gerbil food..... and in a 10G tank there were 2 dwarf hamsters and a gerbil living together. There wasnt any signs of fighting, at least not yet. The hamsters were about the same size as the gerbil. The gerbil dig in the corners while the hamsters cuddled in the wooden house. It would be cute to see them sleep together. The lady there said they get along great, but I wouldnt try it.

That is Nuts!!! Did you tell the lady off about that!! I hope so that is completely Unacceptable! "They get along great" OMG that makes me sick!! some people have no common sense, what is that lady doing working there!
You should call a local animal controlcenter and tell them about it and see if they can give you any number to contact to report this pet store and how they keep their animals.

thats just ridiculous. Customers could come in and see them living together and think that that would work in any circumstance and do it themselves! I would definitely report them.

I have seen gerbils and hamsters in the same cage at 3 of the 4 pet stores I go to routinely...in fact, the 2 gerbils that I just got were living in a cage with 2 hamsters at the pet store. I had always heard they don't get along, but I haven't seen them fighting.

Everything is taken care of... The manager is a good friend of my father. That lady is in for it.... Glad to know you were able to do somthing, doesnt that come on handy hehe, you father knows the owner I hope that lady is either educated or fired lol. Maybe she didnt know better, but she should know at lest the basics knowladge about the animals that are sold in that pet store. I have seen gerbils and hamsters in the same cage at 3 of the 4 pet stores I go to routinely...in fact, the 2 gerbils that I just got were living in a cage with 2 hamsters at the pet store. I had always heard they don't get along, but I haven't seen them fighting. Even if they are getting along doesnt make it right or safe. gerbils and hamsters dont naturally live together. Hamsters for one thing if they are syrian hamster need to be seperated from their own speices once they reach sexual maturiy becasue they are soliaty animals and WILL fight to the death, even male and female syrian hamster must be seperated. The syaian hamster by the way, is the commonly seen on in pet stores. Also Syrian hamsters can easily catch wet tail with is basically deadly once they get it and its usually caused by stress and Im sure having a different species in there hassling them while they normally sleep in the day isnt that great. And at any rate, it is giving people the wrong messages about them. Any pet store you see this happening you shold confont them or report them

I woudl imagine the gerbils and hamsters seen living together are very young. I cannot see any way these aniamls with very dofferent social and physical requirements coudl coexist as adults. I agree that shops having them mixed gives the wrong impression to prospective pet owners and this coudl lead to disaster. Certainly if you see this point out the folly and explain the store why it is a stupid thing to do. Shops are businesses but in my book they still have a moral responsibility to promote responsible pet care of all aniamls, and that starts with the care they give the animals while they are with them.

I wouldnt have thought the lady would be fired, considering it would not have been her decision surely to put them together as presumably theyve done it before? so i would have thought it would be down to the manager considering the managers are after all responsible for the training of their staff.

I dont think she got fired. It was her decision. The place there was crowded with gerbils, without enough space, the group of gerbils fight. To break them up she put one of the gerbil in with the hamsters as a temporally "home".
