I was at my local Petco today to pick up some stuff for the gerbils and was impressed. I saw they had gerbil care sheets that stressed all the ideas that we stress on this forum relating to gerbils. Their gerbils were in nicely equiped tanks and had carefresh/aspen bedding. I think I will email them and tell them how happy I was! ;D

That's great to hear about. It seems we hear so much about bad pet shops...it's always good to know that they aren't all bad.

Thats awesome Ryan! I provide my own care sheets for my gerbils that I bring to this pet store, They were in the process of making care sheets for the animals they sell but I feel better with mine because I know whats on them Im glad to hear that you were impressed, you know about gerbils so if you felt great about how they kept those gerbs then Im sure they were! petco and petsmart hand out basic care sheets but I think there is more information that should be added, it always seems to general to me, But at lest they hand something out and ask questions Its rare that I come across any pet store Im really satisfied with. One more great oetstore makes the world a better place

Yeah, not all petshops are bad! One of my local ones is really excellent! Most of the staff are hobbie rodent breeders and so most of the rodents (and some of the other animals, I think) they sell are pets they breed themselves, so you know the history and you can even meet the parents because they bring their gerbils/rats/hamsters etc to work with them. It's very cute.
The only downside to this is that sometimes they don't have any rodents for sale at all-especially rats as I think only one of the staff members breeds them. So when I wanted to get my gerbils, they'd only had a litter a few days before, so I had to go elsewhere.

I always wanted to open a pet store of my own Just to show em all how its done !! because iv seen some bad pet stores. I figure that if I did open one the rodents/animals est. would be bred by myself so I know they are good quality and what not. And as far as birds id probably have some adoption set up instead of breeding and Im not sure about fish? My hubby is good with fish id leave that up to him. And my pet store would look clean and orderly and we would not carry pine or cedar beddings *smirk* And Id sell custom made bins cages hehe!! Maybe some day, Oh I wish!

I got to visit a Petco over the weekend and was also really impressed with them. The cages they had the gerbils, hamsters, rats and other little guys in were all clean, bigger and had lots of stuff in them to keep the pets happy and busy. I hate it when I go to a pet store and they have them in a tank with just food and water. And this Petco had the gerbil care sheets also and they seemed to cover a lot of the important stuff and seemed to be accurate from what I've learned thru the research I've done so far online.
