Well, yesterday I came home to find that one of the tube openings on the gerbil cage was opened. It has happened before, but they usually stay somewhere close to the cage where I can easily find them. But yesterday I found Cinder missing, and Shasta still in the cage. I closed up the tube and started looking for Cinder. I couldn't find her anywhere. I looked everywhere ! Then later on I was in my room and heard scratching, so I investigated and saw her hiding under my dresser. I tried for over an hour to coax her out but she is much too fast for me! Then all of a sudden I didn't see her under it anymore, and I didn't know where she went. I listened for noises but didn't hear anything for hours. Does anyone have any ideas about how to catch a gerbil that's escaped? Even if I put food out, she would just run back under the dresser and hide if she sees me, and it's too heavy to move very far. Please help!

I don't know if this sounds cruel to anyone, but I use a net, one of those butterfly nets. I dont know if you have one of those lying around somewhere but anything similar would do. Or you can do the traditional shoe box, stick and string ... tie a string around the stick and use the stick to hold the box open, put food under the box and when she's under it pull the string..
Hope you get her back!

hrmm...the stick thing might work if I knew where she was!! lol... I could be waiting for hours and she might not even be in that room anymore. Sigh, if I knew where she was I could trap her somehow. Gosh darnit!!! Gerbils are so sneaky!

Actually, I think a net sounds like a good idea...it doesn't sound cruel at all. It's lightweight, soft...so as not to hurt them.
I hope you are able to catch Cinder soon.

Use the hmaster method- get a bucket into the room with food in, with a ladder or summit to climb up. Mebbe even put Shasta in to coax her. Good luck

Well I came home from work today and went to the room with the gerbil cages...and guess who was crawling around on top of her cage? yep. She must have gotten so lonely for Shasta that she just couldn't bare being away from her any longer. I caught her in 2 seconds and put her back inside. Shasta nearly pummeled her with kisses and grooming. She really missed her! Cinder couldn't even get a drink because Shasta was grooming her so much. She finally stopped enough for Cinder to get a big long drink of water. Maybe she'll think twice before trying to escape again! The funny part is, me and my boyfriend were discussing it a few days ago b4 she escaped, he said the gerbils probably hated living in those cages and were always digging because they wanted to be free.. and i told him no way, they love their tanks, its their home to them and they dig because they think they can make more burrows for their home (even though they cant, lol). and I told him even if they did escape they'd probably end up trying to get back to where they knew their food/water/friends were... and GUESS WHO WAS RIGHT!! haha I can't wait to tell him. But thanks for your help anyway!!

Aw. I think that's so sweet Shaster & Cinder must be very close. I was thinking about this earlier and should've said it but I read a post on this forum .. it was also another gerbil escapee but the only reason why the gerbil escaped was because she was separated from her partner not too long ago so she escaped and went to his cage instead lol .. i think that's the cutest thing
