3 or 4 weeks ago i was in the pet store with 3 gerbils (2female 1 male). I bought the 2 females. Now few weeks later the male is still in the pet store. If i gonna buy that male do they recognize there former mate?
Other question is it a smart idea to put 1 male with 2 females? (its a 120*40*40 aquarium)

No, probably not, probably there will be a fight. I wouldn't do it. Also if the gerbils are over 2 months old your females are both probably pregnant, so it would be wise to find out about breeding gerbils. Here is my gerbil reproduction page to help you out: www.geocities.com/cvaneysinga/birth.html

they would not recogniz each other if you bought him because it has been to long . Gerbils forget each other after 3 days . It is also not a good idea to put one males with 2 females. the to girls would fight over him and it would not be pritty .

i agree with sandy there would probably be alot of fighting and are you sure the male was not their brother because if he was this would cause inbreeding. You would also end up with loads of babies too.

I would also not recommend it, as that will indeed lead to inbreeding, but Mongolian gerbils also forget each other after 3 days! A fighting will most likely occur, when they are older than 10 weeks. Or when not, it might be possible that the females will fight over the mating rights with the male. Sandy, I hadn't seen that page before! Truely an amazing page! I love those photos. You do really show the whole thing!

Though you would have breeding problems if you put the male in the female cage, you could do one of the following things if you are really desperate to buy the male -get the male neutered at the vets so you wont have breeding problems and then introduce him slowly to his former cage mates -have a cage right next to his sisters so he can have their company and his male bits intact -since he is still young, you could buy him and then get another male gerbil and introduce them so they can like together and not be lonely

Hey Cam, If you do purchase the male, you may be best to keep him separate from the girls. If you think the girls may be pregnant, you could then put a male pup in with the male as a companion. I would strongly advise not to put the male in with the females even if he is neutered. The females are still able to reproduce and would fight over mating rights.

I've heard from many on this forum that keeping females in groups of more than two or three can lead to instaability and declanning when they reach sexual maturity. I'm sure its been done before successfully, but I personally wouldn't keep more than three females in a clan together. It probably also depends on how large an enclosure they live in. Anyone else have any ideas?

you could try it, but it would be very risky. it will probably seem o.k at first, but as they get older they may fight over dominance e.t.c. i, personally, wouldn't risk it, especially if they aren't sisters or haven't met before.

Hey there,
I would not add more gerbils unless you split the tank. There have been several members who have had declanning with 3 female gerbils. You might want to ask Doom and Queenie.
