i heard that a gerbils first litter are small is this true ? Not always, the first (and only) litter my first pair of gerbils had was 8 which is quite large and I'm sure other members have had large first litters as well.

how many pups are there on average per litter Lets see in my past experience the average litter was 5 pups. I am not sure what the general average is though I think 5-7. A large litter is anything over 9 and small is any under 4. Kathy

i heard that a gerbils first litter are small is this true ? Usually a first litter is small but occassionally a female may have a large litter, I have noticed if bred females from this litter will also have slightly larger first litter than average. Kathy

Most of my gerbils have 6 pups in the litters. Some moms have on average 3 or 4, some are real producers with 8, 9, even (once) 10!

my First litter was 3, one still born. My second was 5. I think 4-7 seems pretty average.

One of my gerbils, her first litter? She had 11, they ate one and now I have 12 gerbils in this tank, LOL. It's a 10 gallon tank too! They're going to be moved out and into a bin whom I stealing from another family because it's going to get too crowded in there in a couple of weeks.

I think the answer here is...while litter size is variable assume the worst...a big litter...until you know otherwise. Since my biggest litter was 11 (3 where stillborn) and my largest live litter (all survivors) 9, yet my smallest was 2, then I can certainly tell you it's unpredictable.
