The book is about correct. 3-5 years is normal for a gerbil. 5 years and older is rare.

I'm hoping to breed an expanded life expectnacy in my gerbil line this time around like I did last time I bred. It works through selective breeding. Since the petstore breeders only care obout quantity and not quality the average given in books is correct but most AGS breeders are finging theirs to live longer with very careful breeding programs. Right now my gerbils are:
Bolt-1 year 3 moths Perdita-3 months old Cream Puff-9 months Cookie-6 months Tag-5 months Sasparilla-2 months
I realize a couple of them are rather young and expect to wait for pups from them a while longer than the others. I plan to brreed based on this plan: Good Temperment-very improtant Health-very important Curious-very important color-somewhat important size-not very important avid chewer-not a desrieble trait will not breed from chewers Hard nipping-undesireble trait will not breed from these either.
