Now that my gerbils are very tamed I was wondering if (when sitting on my shoulders) they were chewing on my hair? Would it be bad for them? (I only use shampoo) If not could I give them some for nesting? What about cat's hair or would they be upset by the smell?

i don't think that it would harm them having a little nibble when sitting on you. i am not quite sure about giving it as bedding though as hair is made out of the same thing as skin and will decay. we found the best nesting material is toilet roll, the cheap thin kind like tesco value or asda smartprice - useless for wiping your own bum.. Try not to use the expensive stuff as they put resines in it to make it soft and bleach it loads to make it white. Just give it to them as it comes and they will spend hours chewing it up and making nests out of it Andrea

Hello Veronic,
I personally would not use human or animal hair. The shampoo for one and the other is that it is not very giving. The store bedding is the same. The fibers are strong and will harm the gerbils if it gets caught up or tangled in it.
If you want the gerbils to get used to your scent, then you could put some toilet paper in your hands (as long as they do not have oils or lotions on them) and then put the toilet paper in thegerbil house.
