Can the cardboard that I give my gerbils have ink on it?
Cardboard with things that say "L.L. Bean" and the like. And if inky cardboard is OK, to what extent? (Like...a lot of ink? A little ink?)

Personally I think it won't harm the gerbils. I give those all the time, and my gerbils are very healthy, and the oldest is already more than 4 years old!
I only know that the ink of newspapers is toxic!

Good, thanks! I was just worried because before I had gerbils, I had a guinea pig and I read somewhere that ink harmed guinea pigs. I think that's for newspapers though.

Yeah, Newspaper ink isn't good unless it's several days old, or it's soy ink (which is what they mostly use now) But my gerbils LOVE cardboard! I just make sure to rip off the parts that have glue on them. never had a problem!

I give my gerbils mostly boxes that have had food in them. Like pasta boxes and 12-pack soda boxes. I do not give the gerbils any type of box that has held cleaning supplies, chemicals, or medicine. Yes, newspaper ink is really bad. Just look at your hands after reading the paper LOL

my gerbils are fine with cardboard with ink on . I always give them boxes that have had things like ceraeals etc in them and they are fine. My gerbils love egg boxes lol pixytwinkle

Hey Gerb,
I would caution that you don't give them sytrofoam. That is harmful to them!! I forgot to tell you in another post. Mine love the egg cartons but then they changed to styrofoam. Also the drink holders at fast food joints are great.

Egg boxes may be contaminated with salmonella If there is ANY trace of egg or bird poo do not use them I avoid them for this reason Ink is difficult if the carton contained food it should be safe if it contained chemicals (toiletries, cleaning stuff etc) then be more wary, toy boxes etc are more a of a problem
Boxes should be clean , not damp or dusty brown packaging from inside boxes should be fine if anythings been spilt on the box or its been put dwon on anything nasty, don't use it

I agree! If you wouldn't let a kid play with the box, then your gerbil shouldn't. Toilet paper rolls are great! (with or without toilet paper!) Just pull off the globs of glue, and the staples (if there are any)
