Just bought a free standing wheel (the type shown by Peter) but it was forgetting that the gerbils would dig under it and even drag it around so the wheel did not stay standing for long!! Looking at your pics I can see that at least 3 of you (Queen, Crasyc and J) have them in glass tanks. Please advise how you solved that problem and any way I could suspend the wheel in mid air (Crasyc seems to have done it). Many thanks.

You can attach the wheel to the tank lid using twist ties. My tank that contains the wheel is a bread bin, so it has plexiglass for part of the top as well. So I just taped the wheel to the plexiglass top . I used packing tape.

Does the sand have little hooks on the end? If so, you can just drill a hole in the inner plastic piece inside the tank (If your gerbils didn't chew it.. lol, mine chewed most of it) and stick it through there and let it hang.
You can turn it upside down and tape the stand to the cover of the tank and let it hang.
Or you can just tape the stand to the side of the tank. Just have to tape the top part and put it up as high as you can so they can't chew the tape. And if they do chew the tape, they don't get sick or anything. Not like they eat it, they just chew it off.
