As some of you know, I have also a website on recently extinct animals, including a forum. There they told me that at least three gerbil species have recently become extinct. :-/Gerbillus mauritaniae - Mauritanian Gerbil Known only by the holotype collected in the 1940s, which is lost; may be synonym of G. nancillus. :-/Gerbillus nancillus - Sudan Gerbil Very few specimens collected and none after 1970. According to the IUCN full distribution and abuncance not known. That's why they list it as Data Deficient. :-/Gerbillus jamesi - Jame's Gerbil Single specimen collected in Tunisia in the 1950. :-( How could people let such cute creatures go extinct? The way people don't care when numbers of certain animals dwindle is so frustrating

Indeed, the 2004 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species lists 847 animals as extinct since 1500 AD. And every year this list grows! So the 2005 list will contain a lot more extinct animals, I'm very sure about that, sadly enough!
