I check the weight of all my gerbils at least every 2 weeks. If i think that something isn't normal I will check it extra. I keep a book with these numbers.
Saturday (1,5 week after checking) i saw that Farah, a female Persian jird (not even a year old), showed weight-loss. And indeed she lost 10 gram. (151 -10=141 gram)
Sunday I had EXOKNAAG, a rodent show so I was home in the evening. Again she had lost weight ( 141-7= 134 gram)
This really worried me because she was losing weight quickly!
And even stranger her attitude had changed. She was quite aggressive to me but now she wanted to be pet..
Monday morning i checked her weight again.. 134-5=129 gram
I called the vet and drive to him.
He checked everything but couldn't find the problem. And he is a really good vet. I thought that she might be depressed.
I never heard about a gerbil being depressed, but just in case he gave me a medicine to give her.
nothing changed. I had to force her to eat and today she lost a total weight of 45 grams in 5 days. I called an other vet, to get a second opinion.
She checked Farah, but couldn't find a thing wrong.
She thinks that she might have a hart problem. That causes the longs to fill with water. That is preventing her from normal breathing and that might be the reason that she isn't eating.
If so, the vet will have to put her to sleep (forever).
The vet gave Farah a medicine that makes the water in the body go out with urine.
Have an hour later, I was home with Farah and put her back in the "sick-cage" that is nice and warm. She began to eat and eat and eat. for almost 2 hours straight.
After that she looked almost normal. jumping around, walking in her wheel, playing with toys and grooming her fur. She hadn't groomed her fur in almost a week. So showed no sign of being ill at all.
I just checked and she is still doing fine.
If the problem is water in her longs because of a failing hart, than the medicine she had from the vet will stop working at 03.00 in the morning. What means that she will be sick again when I wake up tomorrow.
If that is so, I have to make an other appointment with the vet
But I'm hoping for a miracle!!
