I have used 1/2 inch by 1 inch but I suspect smaller gerbils could get through 1 inch square if they tried!! Yes a crittertrail would be chewed up, also they are too small.

I agree with Doom, apart from anything crittertrails are a pain to put together, very flimsy and badly made, fall apart easily! You're best off getting a glass tank with your money, they are also cheaper than the crittertrail rubbish. Anything other than a tank your gerbils will either chew up or throw the bedding everywhere (they're digging animals).

Yeah definatly get a tank, they're so much better for them (and you!). I remember before I got my girls thinking "Nah, tanks are expesive, I'll just get a cage, they can't make that much mess surely!". The morning after getting my Carrie I woke up covered in wood shavings that she'd kicked across me in the night! I bought her a tank fairly quickly after that.

Yup. My critter trail is now my "sick" cage! or my temporary housing if there's a fight or a newbie around. Otherwise, it's empty! You can also find some used tanks at the 2nd hand store or a garage sale... though it's kinda not yard sale season anymore.

thank you for the replies:) is a ten gallon tank big enough for two gerbils? would a plastic bin work? theres no edges so would they still be able to chew through it? i have a crittertrail for my mice and i love it by the way it was only $20 on sale from $25 and glass aquariums cost more than that, at the pet store where i live anyway. i also thought they were crap until i actually tried one. i will take your advice and not use one for the gerbils though.

I'd definitely see if you can find a used tank; once they're the tiniest bit cracked they're useless for fish, so they're usually given away cheap. You can look in the classifieds as well as yard sales, etc. I know I just saw a tank plus sliding reptile lid in the paper for ten dollars! ;D

Like I said, I go tanks all the way now. Love them. ALso, I pretty much have all of those reptile ones with the sliding latching lid. The 3 on the shorter shelf, and one of the other 20L's on the other shelf I got for $25 at a yard sale. Was gonna be just the 3 20's, but the guys wife- well, I smozed her because at the time I had 10 fosters and had to turn down a few more becauuse I didn't have the tank space- so she threw in the big one! LOL Also, craigslist.org is a great place. Just look up your city.

Yes, all gerbils. The 2 rats are on the very bottom of the tall shelf>> on the floor. Alll you can see is the wheel in the tank. (they have a newly built home now)
