I need a container to show my gerbs. Unfortunately the hamster chewed three holes through the lid of my last one (needless to say, the hamster will not be allowed within sniffing distance of any new one) and as I want to go to Enfield in March, I am in need of another container.
If anyone can advise me as to what the "official" container/s is/are and where I can get one, it would be much appreciated. I know as this will be my first year of showing, I could use anything, but I'm planning on being able to use the container for years to come (hopefully). I checked the advice in the Nibbler (March 2006, I got it in October ;D) but running it through Google got me nowhere.
As all three of my gerbs will be going together, I guess I need a larger container as opposed to a smaller one.

Thanks...except for the handle, that looks just like the "plastic fishtanks" Wilkinsons sell... And I see it has (according to the info) a space for a water bottle. 'tis most peculiar. I wonder if they used a similar model or something...

i got my show containers from P@H. here's a couple of photos from Enfield (march 06)... aww lookit baby Felix :3 i have the space-age looking ones, y'know the weird ones with the domed blue lids ;D (i just had to be different u_u). you probably saw them at the Enfield show in October (haha they're so noticeable against the rest, but if you get the same ones as me, then i won't look so strange anymore!). they're absolutely fine to use, and i have found that they're alot more durable than the other type that everyone else has. they're slightly more expensive at around £4.99, but i think they're worth the money so yesss, you can get the little ones at most petshops. that's probably the best idea, seeing as that's what all the breeders have. ;D

Hah you see on that second pic, where the blonde woman is sitting? I sat there T'was a good spot for watching what was going on in the micey part of the hut. My showtanks are the size of that black one. Cost about £5 or so from a garden centre

Didn't notice any at P@H...is it big enough for 3 gerbs? Don't really want to separate my three and Julian said it would be okay to have all three in the same container as it's my first year of showing. whitmoregirl: garden centre? Are they supposed to be for plants then?

Those weird ones are Beta fish tank sets they sell here in the US. The one in the back looks bigger though - the ones here are small for 1 beta, not big enough for 3 gerbs.

yeah, the small ones really aren't big enough for 3 gerbils. i can fit two gerbils quite comfortably in them for shows (they just sleep anyway, they don't need a huge amount of space) but 3 energetic young gerbils would be a squeeze! yes, the weird tank in the background (2nd pic) is bigger and that would be fine for 3 gerbils i think. as i said, they usually just sleep through the whole thing and as long as they aren't prone to fights, are fine kept in a confined space like that for the day i'll give you the measurements for the larger tank tomorrow - i'm too tired now! yeah, they're *usually* in P@H check your local garden centres to see if there are any others around

Well, oddly enough - I found one of the "space age" type on eBay! Looks just like the picture. lol. I have it on my watch list for the time being. I'll wander down to the garden centre on the off-chance of finding something suitable there; it's within walking distance. Edit 16th: Duly wandered and found absolutely nothing by way of containers - however I *did* find that they stock Charlie Chinchilla Bathing Sand and Gerri Gerbil food. As it's only a 15-minute walk away, that's worth remembering in case I ever run out of either (highly unlikely with the food; I think I've got a year's supply! lol) I managed to find a nice solid plant-pot for them to try demolishing. I also found out there's an aquarium shop right next door to it...and it sells tanks. Not, unfortunately, the type I'm after at the price I'm after (£60 and upwards - I'm guessing that one was a 20-gallon or possibly 25), but their "Aquarium Starter Kit" tank looks just like the majority of containers in those show pics. They don't sell it without the fish gear and the entire thing is £30. I'll probably wind up needing two show-tanks as I'm looking at getting either two or three more gerbils (depends on whether the two are already adopted out, then I can request the three). As a rule, my three only have the odd paw-batting-at-faces (I've seen Mesieth jump sideways six inches to get away from Rheane, but Mesieth stops paw-batting by stepping on the other gerbil's head! lol). I'm betting they'll spend a lot of time digging though. That's after they've run all around poking at the lid. Knowing them, they'll then make themselves either a dip or a burrow, go to sleep, wake up again and repeat the whole process again. Edit 16th: I just noticed ashgerbil said "energetic". Rheane is only energetic if a) he doesn't want to come out of the viv when I'm trying to get him out or b) there's food involved. The other two, however... ;D

for NGS shows? in you first year of showing - yes, probably. in your first year of showing you can use anything that will hold your gerbil(s) and that the judge can open. but it's always best to use the regular show tank if it is your second (or above) year of showing, it has to be like the small plastic tanks in the foreground of the photos. OR you can use the little green cages that the mice people use (in background of photos). but nobody really uses them anymore lol

i know, they look so cute ;D not big enough for a gerbil, but still, adorable lol i bet if you went onto a mouse show website it'd tell you where you can buy those little cages, perhaps they do bigger sizes for gerbils?

I'm going into town in about 45 minutes to check P@H for containers. I already checked once but I wasn't really sure what I was looking for then.
With those clear ones, I was worried about the lids possibly coming off?

I've got both - the bluish clear one and the rectangular show case with the door in the top. I use the 2nd one to move the girls around my house safely, but Bum WILL jump up and bang her head on the lid She hasn't yet managed to budge it, but if I left her long enough she probably would. The first one just latches over a lip and again with enough head-banging it may well shif Caroline
