A while ago I bought some new wire mesh for the lid of my gerbil tank....The wire mesh I'm using now has too big holes in it, but no accidents yet. So I have already stapled the wire mesh to some pine sticks, and I need to remove the old wire mesh before I can attatch the new mesh (which has about 5mm holes in it) Are there any handy people who can give me some tips, because I'm a bit hopeless with these kind of things. How do I remove the staples without destroying the sticks? The new mesh is quite stiff, so I don't even know if staples with stick to it. I need to attatch the new lid soon, because a gerbil has made chewing on the wire mesh his hobby...and I don't want him to get hurt.

I know I can just fold the wire mesh over the corners of the tank, but I want to have a proper lid and it looks really neat too.

I use either a flat screwdriver or the prongs of a hammer to lift up the staples. Or you can grasp them with pliers. As for the new mesh, I guess I don't know what you mean by "stick to it". I usually just position the staple so the it is straddling one wire of the wire mesh.

Hey there,
Lids can be a tough task. Like Queenie said, you could use a flat head screw driver to pry up the staples.
I used wire fencing that was 1/2 inch holes and it does pretty well. They chew on the wire at times, but it is too thick for them to get through. Can you staple the screen over the wire? Straddling the screen would also work as Queenie pointed out unless it won't go through the screen at all. If not, you might want to try a good adhesive glue (only if the gerbils can't chew at it).
