Now I hope I am in the right section?!
I have noticed that my lilac with ruby eyes has smaller eyes than my nutmeg with black eyes. Is it due to their age difference? the lilac is about 9 wks and the nutmeg about 12 wks? or does the pink eye gene carry physical differences? (Sorry no digi camera).

I don't know about gerbils. However I do know there is a fault running through particular colours of fancy rat that makes their eyes smaller. Nothing that is a problem for the animal, but it is noticeable. If you got your lilac from a breeder I'd get in touch and ask them about it.

I think the answer is yes. I just read something about red eyes being smaller than black, if only I could remember where I read it. I know it's definitely true of my own gerbils. I have six black-eyed ones and two red-eyed ones, and all the dark-eyed ones have larger eyes than the red-eyed ones. RW

No, I did not get him from a breeder. He seems happy and healthy which is all that matters to me as I don't intend to breed. I was just curious being new to gerbils; I got him very young (about 4 wks old) as their mother turned nasty on them as soon as they were weaned. But because he looked physically different to his compagnion it did cross my mind that maybe I had 2 different species (not so now that they are 5 weeks older).
