Hi
Its ok delete what you see fit, but please don't sweep it under the carpet! It's far too important as issue not to discuss, it's not my fault that your moderator has by her own admission certain *issues* and saw fit to lock the threads and emotionally blackmail me in another. There was certainly no need to lock any threads.

Hi
Yeah Ryan, read the posts again, we both just said that!
BTW A forum can be as welcoming as you want, but if it suppresses and also gives out bad advice, then its a bad forum in my eyes.

Ryan Eddie runs a very successful and respected gerbil forum and I have just taken over a general pets forum so we are both aware of the issues. We do not wish to get into arguments but we both feel this issue is of vital importance and must be discussed openly. We will trust queenofthenile to make the necessary edits and hope that everyone will benefit from a frank and open discussion on the topic of gerbil illnesses and e-coli in particular.

eddie, if you have a problem you would like to discuss with me, I would prefer if you PM me. We have that function for personal issues and conversations.
As for why Andrea locked the thread, I get the impression she felt the conversation could get out of hand. I think that was a fair assumption, because you started a new thread about the same topic and it did get out of hand. As long as you can discuss issues without making personal comments, threads will remain open.
I am considering deleting some of the content in the E.coli thread so that I can reopen it. As long as there is no discussion of peoples' credibility, integrity and that sort of junk, I feel the discussion should continue. Until I make that decision, however, it will remain locked.
I agree that forums should provide accurate information and encourage discussion. That is as much a responsibility of the members as it is for the moderators.

I also agree with Queenie, 1) It did get personal and that is not "informative" or helpful and does not address E.Coli. In fact when it becomes personal, attention is taken from the important issue. I will say again that when members make it personal they run the risk of loosing credibiity themselves. 2)The members should help maintain the integrity of the Forum by not making it personal and sticking to the topic at hand!! This Forum is open to replies. If members do not agree with a reply then they have the right to reply with the information they feel is appropriate. Replies should pertain to the topic only. 3) Andrea is right about not panicking at the first signs of diarreah. It should be monitored but the pet owner does not need to get excessively worried at the first signs. Again it is the owners choice how to react and respond. 4) Eddie is right in his cause for concern I agree that it is a very serious issue. It does need to be discussed openly. E.Coli is fatal to many animals and humans. We all need to be informed of the symptoms, treatments, and transmission. 5) Other members did a great job at giving appropriate feedback, staying neutral regarding the personal issues, focusing on the topic, and respecting the Forum. For that I thank you . I won't be naming any one though . You know who you are. Eddie, I am sorry that you have *chosen* to feel that this has been an unpleasant experience. We ARE an open Forum. The information given was correct by all parties involved. It was not bad information or incorrect information. The information given was: """"""not to worry *immediately*, relax, and monitor it. If it continues take the gerbil to the vet."""""" I am not sure why you feel that this is bad or incorrect information. I imagine that you feel it was *bad* information because it was contrary to your experience. I believe that the information was givien in the best interest of both the gerbil (not having to be transported and stressed out) and the owner (save some money if it goes away). This Forum is about exchanging information AND experiences. Please do not invalidate other members experiences. Post your information and experiences with out making other members "wrong". Then allow the members to make thier own decisions. We all have to be respectful of each others differences . Just because one member chooses not to worry *immediately* about diarreah does not mean that they do not care. It means they have a different level of tolerance and perhaps a little more experience. If other members choose instead to get excited and take the gerbils to the vet, it does not mean that they are fanatics rather they want to be safe.

How patronising is that??
I will certainly be contacting Peter Maas about the level and standard of moderating I have witnessed on this forum.

Achhem...if I could just butt in there... people do try to keep things under order here, I really dont think it's necessary to contact Peter. He already is on very often. If he thinks it is out of order he will do something about... RIGHT EVERYONE? Oh and Eddie and Doom, I agree. Pipe down. Ryan has a point too. It's not very clear that you said the same thing as him. Sorry to be annoying... maybe I'm not getting the point.

I think any further discussion will be argumentative. This issue has since been resolved. If you have concerns, PM me. This thread is now closed.
