Here's the new pup I'm split-caging with Goat. Can anyone tell what color she is? I looked on that gerbil pallette but I thought she could be one of several of those colors. thanks!, Devun

that picture is a pretty accurate picture of the color of her coat. It isn't plain white... it maybe has a slightly silvery sheen? I think it's very beautiful! Her tail is white but maybe has a little grey in it. Her eyes are very dark. I got her at a Petco, but the people seemed more professional and the gerbils seemed better taken care of than at other pet stores I've visited.

She is very small-- probably about 5 or 6 weeks? Her coat is thick so it's hard to say what color the undercoat is. Her ears are definitely grey.

I bet she's a champagne schimmel-- look at this website: www.agsgerbils.org/Color_Strip/schimmel.htmlI was sort of surprised to see her in the pet store because I hadn't seen that color in Ithaca before. What colors are the most common?

www.geocities.com/Petsburgh/4243/colors.htmlThis is a good guide, if she is a Champagne, she would be slightly baked brown, as she would be completely spotty. Only adults are white. I think mine may be a Champagne, as he has many spotties! This is not good for breeding, so if she turnes out to be a champagne and you want to breed, get a solid colour.

Thanks! She is the prettiest gerbil I've seen in person, though I've only been in pet stores. She was in a Petco in Elmira, New York, living with a beautiful grey gerbil with red eyes and a black one too. What color do you think she is, Sweetie?

You may have to wait until she is older to know for sure (or make a good guess . She reminds me of a colourpoint schimmel (Echo on the right): www.wagerbils.com/availablegerbils.htmlThe nose means she must have some variation of ee.

She is a lovely Black Eyed White, and there could be several ways genetically to get a gerbil that looks like her:
(excerpt from my gerbil genetics notes)
ee gene:
(BEW) Colourpoint Schimmel -- ** cbc* efef ** P*
gg plus ee genes:
(Black Eyed White) Colourpoint Polar Fox -- A* cbc* ee DD gg P*
(BEW) Silver Schimmel -- ** C* efef DD gg P*
Lt Colourpoint Nutmeg – aa cbch ee DD G* P*
*(Light Colourpoint Nutmegs are also considered BEW but molt around 8 weeks)
(BEW) Colourpoint Grey Agouti (Silver Pearl) -- A* cbcb E* DD gg P*
(BEW) Light Colourpoint Grey Agouti -- A* cbch E* DD gg P*
(BEW) Colourpoint Silver Nutmeg – aa cbcb ee DD gg P*
(BEW) Light Colourpoint Silver Nutmeg – aa cbch ee DD gg P*
note: cb= chinchilla medium gene, ch=himalayan gene

sandy, why are cp slate and lcp slate considered BEW? It is very obvious from birth that they won't be white. I haven't seen the other colours in person, so I'm not sure about their colouring when really young.

I think it might be a polar fox!! Then again I am not the brightest when it comes to genetics. Ask poor Queenie who did a complete write up on genetics for me and I was still confused!!
All I know is that the technical genetic aspects of gerbils are not my strong point. I know that they are wonderful beautiful creatures who have stolen my heart and my pocket book LOL. I am facinated by their behaviors and antics.
I love your gerbil. I am not concerned with the name of the color but I do know that I love the way she looks. The white fur and the black eyes! WHen I was in Maine, I saw one in a pet store but she had a deformed front hand. Her hand was a ball with only one finger. I was not sure if it was genetic or an accident.
