I have a question regarding my Sapphire Sweetie,
I currently have Momma Bear paired with Squirt. If Momma Bear is too old, to have babies, can I pair up Squirt (sp Burmese) with Sweetie my Sapphire?
I really want Burmese Babies!!! I mean Really I do.

You should be able to do that if you want burmese pups. Assuming no recessives (as in no Pp for Squirt, etc) you should get 50% burmese and %50 black pups (%50 spotted, of course). How old is Squirt? It can sometimes take a long time for a young male gerbil to mate, I noticed that with one of my pairs - it took him several months.

But if Squirt is Pp = 25% white pups . That's why it is a big risk to breed Sweetie. If Squirt is Pp, and you breed a Pp colourpoint to him, you will get about 50% white pups. (editted because I made a mistake ;D)

PP is red eyes right? I am not being disrespectful, but white is not a color I would breed for. In my area, there are many white gerbils.
Squirt is now about 12-14 weeks old. I would only pick Sweetie to Breed with since Blackie's temperment is not as good as Sweeties (as her name suggests). I guess I am really concerned that Momma Bear is too old to have pups. I am definitely keeping one of her offsrping!!
On another note, all of bandits pups are adopted out except one female. I will keep her to help her raise the expected pups. That will leave Honeymunch alone for a little bit. I have them split caged. that is okay if he's alone for a little bit right? I just don't want Bandit to be pregnant all the time. It can't be heathly for her.

PP = black eyes Pp = black eyes pp = red eyes If Squirt is Pp x Sweetie's pp, you get: 50% Pp = black eyed pups 50% pp = red eyed pups 50% of the red-eyed pups will also be CbCb (colourpoint), which will make them white = so you will get 25% white pups (sorry I made a mistake in the last post ). If there are no other recessives from Sweetie or Squirt, you would get: 25% black 25% sapphire 25% burmese 25% white But if Squirt is PP, you will get: 50% black 50% burmese It's a gamble... You could breed them and split cage them right before the birth. If you saw any red-eyed pups right after they are born, then you wouldn't breed them again. You would get *some* white pups from that litter, but at least you would know if Squirt was Pp.

Hey guess what!!! Yup you're right. Momma Bear is VERY pregnant and will be a mom soon so I won't have to change the dynamics of my existing pairs. Thank goodness!! I will post pictures soon. Bandit just had 5 more and one is a pink eyed pup. I have lots of pictures to take.

Congrats!! ;D I think my young SP burmese boy is going to be a father in a few weeks too . They mated once (when he was 7 weeks old) and haven't since then. Funny...I thought gerbils weren't sexually mature until later then that...

Hey Cal, Gerbils can become sexually active and reproduce at 7 weeks. Especially if they are put in with an already sexually mature mate. They tend to mature faster if in with an older mate. Congratulations. I love the Burmese colorings!! I hope all goes well for you!

Thanks Sweetie, I love burmese coloring to Hopefully I'll have some spotted & solid little siamese, burmese and 50/50 chance of CP slate pups around by Jan 21;D I can't wait, it's her(siamese) first litter, and she spends most of her time trying to escape the tank and explore, cardboard just bores her. I'm hoping when the pups come along she'll devote more of her time to them, and not persist at getting a run around the room. . I'm always nervous first litters because I haven't lost a pup yet, and I know statistically it should happen with any of the next litters born, but I'm hoping for the best I'm glad your six from Mamma Bear are doing good, lol, you must have a lot of babies around the house by now!! ;D I've only got 2 girl pups right now, and they're so sweet I'm really tempted to keep them ::)I'm going to be overrun with gerbils in 6 months, I can just see it

Hey Cal, Mommas babies are smaller than Bandits but I am sure that is because she had more!! Bandits pups are little porkers!! They are so plump and so cute. It is hard not to keep them all. I am having a hard time trying to figure out what to do. I don't want any more litters and I am not sure if I should keep 2 pups to keep one of each with the parents or try to pair the 2 older males Honeymunch and Squirt to prevent more litters. I can't find a vet to neuter the males. What heve you done. I am pleased to hear you haven't lost a pup!! That is great news. I was worried that I would lose one with Bandit since she was younger (5 months) and it was her first litter. It was a great experience. She made it look so easy then Momma Bear lost 2 and at first, I thought I just counted the litter wrong. When I did another count and got 6, I new I was right on the first count. I did not second guess myself. Of course it was easier to think I counted wrong than to admit the reality. Jan 21st, huh? I can't wait to see pictures. I know that there is one black in the litter and one pink eyed gerbil. I can't wait tho see what the rest are! Such surprises

Are you splitting all your breeding pairs? I had a nutmeg DTW pair that had all black pups every time, and those were really hard to find homes for. I kept all the first born boys (it's hard to give away the first pups born to a pair, lol) and put them with dad, and kept a daughter with mom. If you didn't mind having a lot of gerbils around, you could pair up a son or two...or three (the colors/personalities you like best) with each dad, and a daughter with each mom. I can't find any vets that will even look at gerbils around here, it's hard to split a breeding pair because they're so cute together especially with the pups, but it's the only way I can think of to control litters. Are you sure you want to stop breeding permanently? You could split one of the pairs, and use a split cage for the second pair, so after mom's had a little breather without pups, you could let her and dad together again for a litter every now and then. I haven't had that many litters yet, (1 pair had 7, and 10 pups, another 4 and 5 pups). ( I kept both first litters) and made little pamphlets, with pictures of cute gerbil pups, and some of my gerbils on my hand, with description of what's avail, why gerbils are such great pets, etc. And dropped them off at a lot of the elementry schools around here, and that worked really well. All pups have been adopted even though I've only had agouti, pew, and black up to this point, because I diddn't know the genetics of the DTW male (chch and P), and the other pair was pet store gerbils (only black and agouti avail in stores here). My current three pairs will be my first spotted pups, colorpoints, and other varieties of colors ;D I'm so excited, I took some pictures of the expectant parents, adn will try to get them downloaded soon I'm sorry about the 2 from Mamma Bear, 8 pups is a lot for a first litter. At least she did the cleaning up, If I counted less pups I'd be so terrified to poke through the bedding and come across the dead pup, and have to remove it... Pairing the two dads is probably best if you don't want to have a minature gerbil zoo. Do you know what colors the pups from Bandit and mamma bear are? It's so much fun to watch the fuzz come in and try to guess their colors ;D

I like your ideas Cal!! I have recently completed a website and brought the gerbils to the school for the kids in my son's class to watch, learn and feed. It was a big success. I nw have the class giving him the paper towel tubes!! It is really cute. I think that I can put up a flyer in the school! That might be a great idea. I am not sure if I want to separate them permenantly or not. I just love them all so much. It is hard to adopt them out. I guess right now things are *extremely* hectic for me. I do plan on keeping at least one from Bear's litter and one of Honey munch's litter. I am limited to room and resources or I would keep them all. Thank you for the suggestions. I appreciate it. I think that I really don't want to stop breeding but I don't want to have unwanted pups . I also have another litter from Bear on the way. It is hard to split them up in a tank because they try to crawl up the divider to get to each other! It breaks my heart that's why I thought about nuetering him so that I could keep them together.

lol, that's cute that you got the class so involved ;D I always hate split caging to because they look so miserable in their tiny halves of the cage, gnawing at the bars all the time I'm a little worried about finding homes for all the pups, I ran a search on the internet and a lot of petpages and such came up, where if your a breeder you enter what species your breeding, colors, location, etc. and they post it for you, but I'm not sure how many ppl actually check those But better to have the word out in a lot of places I guess. Someone gave me the pamphlets suggestions, I'm always looking for more ideas, one problem is I live very close to 4 pet stores (2 are big), nearby many more, and the same city as 2 other breeders... so I'm definently not going over 3 pairs, and if I have trouble finding homes I'll have to split them and try just one pair. But the other breeders momentarily have no breeding pairs. I still have to find a home for a single black pup (kept the only other daughter to live w/mom) but I want to pair her with another female before she leaves, so she won't end up alone. What colors are the pups your keeping from mamma Bear and Honeymunch? I love the name Bandit, lol I always have so much trouble thinking of good names.

Strangely enough, I only got to name Bear. My husband named Bandit!! The kids names the rest. I am not sure how to do this so that I only keep 1 boy and 1 girl from each litter to pair with the parents. I don't want to leave them alone or pair the mates back together until I adopt out the ones I have and are about to have again. I hate keeping them separate also. Honeymunch and Bandit climb to the top to try to get to each other. So far, I adopted out from the website/AGS and my husband had some one from work want a pair. I think I am going to take your idea and place a flyer in Evan's school and one at my husbands work. I might also make up business cards to hand out to the people I talk to about them. If I can get a picture of them on there that would be great so people could see how cute they are. Good luck to us both finding homes for them. I also live right near Petsmart. There are 7 petstores with in 25 minutes of us.
