Hi, Hope this works! Is this lovely lady a Polar Fox? <img src=" img.photobucket.com/albums/v653/CLyon4/DSC00151.jpg">Thanks, and if so what makes a good pairing with a Polar Fox, I know that is a more in-depth question than it appears but I haven't figured out the intricacies of genetics... I would love a siamese but don't know how to breed one!!! I just could not pass her up at Petsmart and I can't decide whether to get a female companion or a male to breed her with!!!! I thought she was beautiful. Christi

yopu using the wriong tag for forums it should be [ img ] URL [ img] (no spaces) in photobucket thats the third little pane under your picture
The tag you are using <img src= is a html tag for inserting pictures into websites, auctions etc.

Hey C,
I am not sure it is a polar fox. I think a polar fox is white with black eyes. Did you try the AGS color strip yet?

Thanks so much Andrea!!!! I was counting the title of the picture and clicked on the wrong tag... Anyway thanks for getting it up there! I did look at the AGS Color Strips and another color pallette out there, she looked more like a Polar Fox than CP Agouti but how do I know for sure?! Christi

Well I've never seen a polar fox but my colourpoint agouti's have a slight reddish or brownish tint to the ticking, giving them a bit more of a beige colour. The colour also intensifies on the tail and the nose, and lightens a bit on the back. As far as I know, the ticking on a polar fox is even all over. It looks as though your gerbil carries g recessives because her ticking is so heavy (seems heavy for a plain colourpoint agouti). I wonder if she might be a colourpoint grey agouti. It might be a good idea to look for some pictures of them to compare. Here is a picture from another web site of a polar fox, which you can see is quite different from yours: gerbilsuk.proboards15.com/index.cgi?board=genetics&action=display&thread=1106264648

I was thinking maybe cp nutmeg? How old is she? If she's still quite young, I'd bet the cp nutmeg and that her points will darken with age. From www.petermaas.nl/gerbils/english.htm

Yes, she does look a lot like that, and I guess time will tell, if the points develop. Just for reference, here is my colourpoint agouti female:

Could she be a silver nutmeg...?
I've never seen one in person, but just thinking with the heavy grey ticking it might be a possibility?

Sandy,
I assume that you use sand (in the picture) in your tanks? How does that work out? Do you spot clean or take everything out? What else is in there?
I do think my girl is a CP something as I think the points are getting darker, but will post a picture in a couple months...

That tank is the only one with that substrate. It is chinchilla dust and I do not leave them in for long, just enough to play a bit and condition their coats once a day as chinchilla dust can irritate the lungs. My gerbils are all on paper kitty litter pellets with hemp on top for softness. I have used aspen before but still a few of my gerbs were allergic, also a lot of my gerbils are breeding pairs.
