Hey there -- was thinking of trying to introduce some Kaytee Aspen shavings into my gerbs bedding, but the last brand i tried (Premier Pet) smelled VERY strongly of wood oils and gave one of them a red nose. And i couldn't handle the strong smell either. It was marked very clearly as aspen and said "No aromatic oils" but it really stunk! (I immediately changed to ultra carefresh, but it is so expensive!)
I was just wondering, before i go out and buy another big bag, does the Kaytee brand of shavings have a strong smell? I don't know what aspen is suppose to smell like, so I don't know if i was just over-sensitive to the last brand, or if it wasn't really aspen or something...

Aspen with 3 gerbils is VERY good at odor control. You can't smell it unless you REALLY try to sniff it. I usually don't have to clean it ofr 3 weeks. ;D

Ohh, you mean the smell it puts off? My apsen doesn't have much of a smell, but it isn't the smell that causes red noses.

You know, I was just wondering this last month. I use Kay-Tee oil-free aspen in the huge vacuum-sealed packages, and normally it has no distinct odor. Then last month when I ran out I bought a fresh bag and to this day it smells quite strong. Same company, same product, but this batch smells woodsy fresh. The gerbs have been on it for weeks with no problems, so I can only assume it's the same stuff. I can't figure out why it smells stronger this time, though. Could just be the way aspen works, that some batches are stronger than others.

I've heard lots of good things about Aspen. My boyfriend has a rat, his sister has a hamster, and the brother has 3 gerbils (from me!). THe hamster is on Ultra Care Fresh (it's what they got before they got 4 more critters!) Now they have Aspen, but the rat and the gerbils are on it. The rat stinks it up fast though! THe gerils seem to love it. It smells nice, but only if you stick your face in there! I use Corn cob, or Kay cob. Either one. I just finished mixing the last of my pine into it, but I'm buying Aspen next to mix it with the Corn Cob. My gerbies love the corn cob. They like to dig in it! The shavings just soften it, and make it more cozy!. When Sandy came down to see me, she had her gerbils on an interesting mix! She said it was a paper product kitty litter (it looked like alfalfa pellets, only not the same color) and she said she had some aspen mixed in it, to soften it, and then of course, the gerbils mixed in lots of cardboard!

I got a big bag of Kaytee aspen shavings a while ago and it doesn't smell nearly as strong as that first bag i bought. This bag just has a pleasant tree smell -- that other bag REALLY stunk!

Yeah, it really depends on the brand. I had the same thing happen to me Tasha.
