do gerbils need wheels because if i take my gerbils wheel out they become depressed and last time i noticed they were gaining weight fast too so i put it back in. My gebrils especially the female one practically lives for her wheel she is on it most of the time she is awake.

i heard that they dont need a wheel, but they really enjoy having one and it does keep there waight down. before i got a wheel, i would just take them out once and a while, for a run.

My female is ALWAYS in her wheel too! She didn't use it the first 3 days after her litter was born, but after that, I had to remove it because it was taking presidence! Even now that they're 18 days old, she still only gets her wheel when I take the pups out to play!
Silly girls...

Hey Pixy,
Funny you mention this. I never had a wheel since I took them out regularly. Well I have since bought 3 wheels. I noticed Bubba was getting rather *fluffy*. I thought it was him fluffing since it is getting colder. Bubba was a chunky gerbil.
I put the wheels in and the pups and the girls used thiers but the boys have not. I am hoping that he decides to use it or he'll have to go in the roll-a-round ball every day until he slims down.
I would think that the wheel is a preference. If you let them out enough they will not need one. If you can't let them out regularly then I would keep one in there.

you can also take them out in a secured room and let them run for a while

Hey Gerbil, I tried that but they kept running under the couch and trying to nest. then I tried the kitchen and they kept finding ways in to the living room. Finally, I just got the roll around balls and once in a while I block off the kitchen and watch them really closely. It is really important to make sure they get lots of excercise. Like kids, the more they run, the happier they are and they are less likely to do devilish things

sweetie, I like to use the bathroom or an empty closet. If the bathtub is dry, I like to let them run around in there. They love it!
