I don't know what happened. My 10 yr old and her friend were playing with our 2 gerbils and she came running in saying Abercrombie was having a seizure. They put Hollister back in the tank and Abercrombie was twitching and squirming and peeping. I think she got hurt because she seemed scared. She did not want me to touch her and tried to squirm away. I put her in a carrier and she convulsed and died. I still took her to the vet and they said yes she passed. I held her and pet her a bit, she was stiff but still warm. An hour later I buried her. Maybe if I dind't pick her up. I think I scared her to death, maybe she would have recovered. She didn't fall and the girls said they did not hurt her, although I think accidentally they did. They are both gentle and caring and the gerbil was friendly but accidents can happen. I feel guilty , sad and I'm so upset for the other gerbil. We have only had them for five weeks, we rescued them from a shelter. I just had to tell this to people who know what it is to love a gerbil. I miss her already. Thanks for listening.

So sorry to hear about your gerbil Unfortunately, some gerbil lines are especially prone to epilleptic seizures. Up to 40% of all gerbils may be predisposed to this condition, though usually it doesn't kill them. I'm very sorry; I hope you and your family feel better soon -Megan

Thank-you all for caring. The gerbils are at least 9 months old or could be even older. We got them from a shelter. Someone rescued them on their way to a lab. How soon should I try to get her a new buddy? Hollister seems to be ok she is eating drinking chewing and running in her wheel. She is also much calmer and is letting us hold her for more than 2 seconds. She looks so lonely sleeping though. We only had them for 5 weeks.

You should try ASAP, but, when you find one you will need to introduce them slowly. Sorry to hear about Abercrombie.

Yeah, I would also recommend finding a new friend for Hollister soon. Just make sure it's the same sex (Don't trust the pet store, check them out yourself! Either that or buy from a reputable breeder, which is what I did to get a companion for my gerb) and read up in the Behavior and Introducing Gerbils section for ways to properly introduce two new gerbils to each other. Good luck!
