A year ago when my friend went to Petco to buy rats, and I tagged along, I decided to check out the gerbils. The cages were one big tanks and gerbils and dwarf hamsters were separated by a piece of plastic. I was watching a little black gerbil run around with a missing tail. I then looked over at some cute tiny hamsters that seemed to be sleeping. Then the black gerbil slid under the dividing plastic into the Hamster cage. I called my friend over but he ran back. I decided to keep my eye on him then I noticed the two little hamsters seemed were very still and i was afraid they were dead (I’m not too familiar with hamsters) So I asked my friend to watch them and I went up to the desk and told them. The girl at the desk didn't seem like she knew what she was doing and she (rudely I thought) said "It's fine". Everything I knew about small animals told me this what not fine so I asked to see the manager and went to wait for her by their cages. She was very nice and explained to me he was abused and sent back from every home he went to for freak reasons. He had bonded with the hamsters. I was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The hamsters woke up and they played and then all cuddled and went to sleep.
Note: this was a strange case; never put small animals of different species together

I had a black female gerbil called Jet who bonded VERY closely with a Russian hamster They used to mimic each other and sniff each other and everything. (their cages were next to each other) The reason the 2 were on their own was because the Hamster's 2 brothers had died and the gerbil didn't have any sisters in her litter (and she was from a petshop). Jet has devistated when the hamster died. We tried to get her to bond with a little gerbil, but what she said to it isn't repeatable, even in gerbil. I recon that you proberbly could get Russian hamsters and gerbils bond and live together in the came cage... but it isn't something for the inexperienced to try out. I wonder if the black gerbil at the pet shop thought that she was a hamster.
