In autumn on year, Amber (a particully fat gerbil who thinks that the wheel was only in her cage as a novity seat) was given a whole juicy blackberry late one evening.
In the morning there was BLOOD all round the cage. Being worried (and only 11-12 at the time) I woke Amber up to see if she as alright. All around her mouth and on ger tummy there was red staining. I later reliased that it wasn't blood around the cage, but the juice of the blackberry. Dueing the night Amber must have ripped it open to try and find the nut or seed in the middle of it. But being a blackberry, there wasn't one! I did try giveing Amber a blackberry again, but she wouldn't touch it!!! (she stayed stained for quite along time!!!)

It was a relief, but we still had to change her bedding after that! She was a great gerbil. Though she did not believe in exercise, she did run laps on the double bed when she was let out. Occasionally she took the bend too fast and would skid off the bed and land in a shoe and sit there looking slightly dazed until she was put back on the bed! How she always managed to land in a shoe, I don't know.
