Hey everyone i need some major advice!! I recently bought a female gerbil from a pet store and i picked her because i felt bad since she was all alone in her cage. I've read everywhere that a lone gerbil is an unhappy gerbil and i'm considering introducing another female, but my current gerbil (Angie) is 4 to 6 months old so i'm not sure if it will work. also i need to decide if the companion should be from a cage where she was with other gerbils or was by herself. please help! i want her to be happy and i'm not sure what to do.

Just introduce her to yours. Age doesn't matter. Just make sure to do it slowly and use the Split Cage Method. ;D

If you decide to try and introduce another gerbil, make sure you get 2 so if it doesn't work out you won't have another lonely gerbils.. Females are notoriously hard to introduce to a new gerbil.

I found some gerbil breeders in MD and i was thinking maybe i should get a pup and maybe even take her with me so she can pick one out. is that a good idea? i know i really should try to get another cause shes got a sweet temperment but she seems kinda depressed and lonely even w/all the toys i get her. should i try to take her out more? she seems to get scared so i've been laying off nad just putting my hands in the cage and stuff but i dont know if this is gonna help her get used to me. Thanks!

Taking a gerbil out more and giving it more toys won't help much. Gerbils are social and need to be with other gerbils..
Why would you go and get another pup for her without trying to introduce her to your other one? That's mean to leave the other one alone, at least give them a chance together.. Your other gerbil really isn't that old. If that one doesn't have a "Sweet Personality", it's because she is alone. She would most likely come around if she had another one with her.
Or you could get 2 young pups and put one with each gerbil.. It's actually easier to introduce pups to any gerbil, old or young. Usually you wouldn't even need a split cage with pups/adults.

well i am going to get a pup, because i dont have another one. which was the problem in the first place, she was alone at the pet store which is why i bought her by herself and am now looking for another gerbil, angie the one i mentioned is the only one i have.

Sorry, misread it then. I thought you meant you had a new gerbil and already had an older one at home.
But yeah, getting a pup for her is a good idea. ;D

calling breeders....on my way to gettin a pup ;D so excited..i really want a siamese, but i'll let her pick the new lil girl out. im glad that i decided to get a pup instead of a full grown, might be easier on her ne ways, the poor thing. i really hate how petstores dont take any care in trying to socialize them and how they don't leave them in pairs. haha well i picked up a handful but she looked so sad i had to get her and they had groups of three there but i was only interested in two so i didnt want to split the groups up. hopefully she'll become more social, you can tell shes nice. shes so friendly when she does come out and has never bitten me even when she has been ultra scared (aka the first time i had to clean her cage). thx everyone, any tips on how to help her along now or once i get the pup are welcome.
