Ack! Haven't been by here in a while. I have some questions. ;D Sometimes I hear my gerbils making this sound..it sounds like they're chattering their teeth... What's that for? Also, sometimes when I walk by the tank, one will hide and start thumping. That kinda hurts my feelings... I thought we were friends by now. Maybe they just hate me,. ;D;;

They are calling you names LOL ;D Only joking.
I have heard when they are chattering they are communicating with each other, but we cannot hear the "speech" as its out of our hearing range, so you hear the teeth !
Our do this run hide and thump sometimes, especially our "pet shop" honey. But he bites the hand that feeds him Literally!. I have to wear gloves to feed his colony !. he bloody got me the other day latched on and tried to death roll my hand!, bloody so and so!. funnily enough hes great when you handle him just hes so possessive over his house and his tank mates !
Ours seem to do the run, hide and thump if i walk up to the tanks to quickly or if the light isn't very good. its just there natural insticts i guess, you have to bear in mind in the wild ariel preditors are there biggest threat so you looming over the tank makes there basic survial instincts kick in.
I am sure they like you just sometimes gerbs have a funy way of showing it!

I've noticed the chattering of the teeth most when Indira was in labour. Maybe she was cussing out her husband or something ;D.

I've noticed my gerbils chattering with their teeth, when they were having a fight! But I'm not sure if we are talking about the same sound right now. ;D
