Well, I've been gone for a bit due to having to spend the past few nights wandering through the woods in search of one of my dogs who ran away, and was gone FAR longer than she'd ever run away for before--and for those wondering, she was brought back tonight, safe and sound....We were giving her 1 more day before deciding that the Coyotes got her.
However, onto the Gerbils: Once again I am wondering about the behaviour of my gerbils. I posted here because part of the title is behaviour, so eh. Anyway..they still seem to be singing to each other, particularly that one who they also seem to be feeding and grooming the most. I now have an old Medicine drum in there for them, and they LOVE it. I had to cut the skin off the drum so they wouldn't try to eat it, so all they have is the wood (which I'll get a picture of sometime) but they all live inside it now instead of in the bottle or in the corners under the toilet paper. I guess they feel safer. However, sometimes I'll see them grooming each other and making tiny sqeaky noises. No one seems to be harming anyone else, and these three are still amazing me every day. I gave them a plastic dish with some chinchilla sand in it, and instead of bathing they pee in it but eh, whatever make sthem happy
But it's the sounds that I wonder about. No one is fighting, and they're still catering to the one Gerbil as if he is special to them somehow. They take turns grooming, and they play with each other a lot...Cute little pushes and pokes in the nose, or if I give them a toilet paper roll one will get on each side and try to pull it away from the other one. The 'special' one likes to watch them. He's also the only one who will NOT come take sunflower seeds out of my hand. But the other two stand on my hand, chirp a little, then take the seeds into the drum. I can't see inside their drum-nest, but I know when they lived in the bottle they would sometimes jsut drop the seed and let the special one have it, then go back for more. These guys are really cool to watch, I just never thought that I would be listening to them as well. Since they're not fighting I am deciding it is safe to assume that the sounds they make are not aggressive...I just wonder what it is they're saying to each other and if all gerbils are what -seems- to be loving families like this. I envy these guys! The last thing -my- brothers did for me was driveme to the airport back in April! ;P
