I have one black female (blackie) and one black male (cowboy). They are both tame and have roomies. I will say that Blackie took a big bite out of my hubby when he tried to catch her one day. Drew blood and every thing. If you asked him, he would say that Black gerbils are extremely aggressive (rightfully so). She is also nibbly when I put my hand in there with any scent on my hand (lotion, soap, food). Sweetie my Sapphire is a doll but she was *more* aggressive than Blackie when I tried to introduce Bear a while back!!

All my blacks are darlings. One fave of mine, Slesse, is black. She's a great mom, too. However, I did have one client report that her black and agouti female pups declanned at about 6 months old. She returned them and I gave her males instead. Maybe its a female-black thing...I would not breed from a gerbil that was aggressive in any way.

I agree. Better to breed for temperment than color. If you look at the shelter, you find the most mixed breeds but they tend to have the best temperments!! They make better pets than many pure breds.

lol if your friends took 2 black gerbils each, maybe black gerbils are just racist and aggressive with any other color. ;D I want one of your gerbils. They live past 5. You have them trained like dogs where they follow you around your house...you had like 20 in a clan forever... I'm jealous. Haha, those two friends live together and the two gerbils they have are indeed both black! I've even selected the only black pup in a litter to breed, because she was the most docile, tame one! I've indeed two very old gerbils, but those two are both male! My females didn't get that old! And the oldest is almost 5, just about 2 months to go!
