I have a precious, sweet, adorable little girl gerbil named Dot. She doesn't bite, and she loves people....but HATES other gerbils. She used to be with her sisters, but they declanned, and we put her with one other. Then Dot got vicious, and we had to separate those two. We've had Dot in two separate split cages, attempting to put her with two different gerbils...and even after several weeks, she still attacks. In the split cages, she would attack the screen for at least a week, very viciously. So, she's alone now...and she seems alright with it. How would I tell if she's upset being alone? I had one that I successfully introduced to another who was lethargic, didn't come out much, and couldn've cared less about anything I gave her, but she's much happier with her roomie now.

When a gerbil is upset about being alone, they sleep and hide a lot, don't chew or eat much and do a lot of compulsive digging no matter how many toys and things they have. They usually get more skittish, nervous and thump alot..so if yours is still tame, probaby doesn't care. How did they declan though? Because maybe if she got attacked first it scared her so much she just needs time.. Taking her out of a declanning and then splitting her with different gerbils could've been way too stressful. So just go by how she acts. Have you tried introducing a young pup like 5-8 weeks.. that's usually the easiest way to pair up a gerbil. I don't think the viciously attacking the splitscreenautomatically means loner. I have a dominant male in a clan of 7 that used to fight with my nutmeg. I tried split screening the nutmeg by himself for a couple days to see what would happen and 2 gerbils kept lunging and attacking the screen. I took out the nutmeg and they've all been fine since. It was just the nutmeg they hated.

Why black? Are they more loners in your opinon?
I have two males that live alone after they started to fight after more than 3 years together. They both seems fine, but really like it to get out of the cage. They are allowed to walk around my livingroom for some hours a days, when I'm home. On is now almost 5 years old, the other 4 years.

Two friends of me have black gerbils that came from me! They are very docile! I have had several black gerbils, but never had an aggressive one.

hmm well I have a black female who is overprotective of her pups (I have the scars to rpove it) BUT my second soppiest gerbil is a pied black I find golden agoutis tend to be more aggressive overall BUT add the spotted gene and they are the nicest Argentes are very calm yet my most aggressive incidents where with a pied argente (go figure) who i now definitely no3 in the soppy stakes!!! Feedback from people who have gerbils from my clan are that they are friendly, adorable, cheeky and naughty but NEVER vicious. Draw your own conclusions

They live past 5. You have them trained like dogs where they follow you around your house...you had like 20 in a clan forever... I'm jealous.

I know that all black gerbils aren't viscous, it's just kind of a joke for me because both black females I've had have constantly pestered their mates.

Haven't had black gerbils for ages, mine were not vicious.gonna go and look at that other post. I'd have thought it more likely, that maybe some lines are better tempered generally, either from breeding or the stock they started breeding from.
looking at it from a human perspective, there are plenty of ppl i would rather kill, than live with ;D.So why should our gerb's put up with somegerb they don't really like, just 'cos we wish it.

Strangely, my black gerbil is my little psycho too. Used to have a pair of girls living together - one white, one black. They were sisters from two different litters, the white one being the older one. They lived happily until one night when they started fighting. The black one was definitely the instigator of the fighting. She is still living with me, but her own now. And she has bitten me quite badly as well. Not to say she is evil - I love her to bits, she is very cheeky, and loves yoghurt drops - nearly takes my hand off when I give her them!! On the other hand, my tamest gerbil was a pied/mottled black. Used to climb up my arm to get out of the tank, and sit on my shoulder. In fact if I was to get any more gerbils....

She's not black. I THINK she's a CP slate. She's the one in my siggy pic with the dot on her head. That's how she got her name. We do have a black girl named Gerbster though, and she hates fingers!
