I've got a pair of females in a split tank right now. I don't know their exact ages, but one is definately much younger than the other. At first, the older one (Sesame) was jumping at the divider, and the younger one (Rocky) was just ignoring her. Now they sniff at each other and Sesame isn't jumping at her anymore. The set up on both sides is exactly the same, house, food dish, water bottle and a tube, and I switch them every day.
My questions are, should I put the houses next to each other so they're not sleeping on separate sides of the tank? When I do eventually take the divider out, do I leave everything in there? Two of everything? I'm sure they won't just become instant friends when I do take it out, will there be some boxing or chasing? Is switching them once a day not enough? I've read some people do it several times a day.

Two of everything is fine, at least until you are sure that one gerbil isn't preventing the other gerbil from drinking or eating. There may be some boxing, but hopefully no chasing (that is more of an aggressive thing). I switch them 3-4 times a day.
