It's strange, if I'm sitting on the couch looking at the gerbils, I will see one stand up and bob her head up and down...the weird thing is, if I do it back to her, she will keep copying me. I bob, she bobs etc. Is it just coincidence or is that some kind of signal or communication? It probably means "Quit staring at me you crazy woman!" She's looking again....everybody bob! heather

;D What color are her eyes? RW I don't have any with light colored eyes. I know what you're thinking though, my light colored rats do the swaying thing when they're trying to focus.

If it is not the eyes, it might indeed be somekind of communication! Does she do it all the time or not?

At least a dozen times a day I find Penny bobbing at me, and it seems like she's not satisfied until I do it back. Cuties. ;D

They do that since they don't have good depth perception. Their eyes are on the side of their head so there isn't much cross-over. They are better at seeing at a distance than up close. They will bob up and down since objects farther away will not move as much as objects up close.

ishido,
Correct ;D I just read that tonight as a matter of fact. They have good vision all around but have difficulty percieving depth. They can see in a lot of directions but need to bob thier heads to judge the depth of a hole or ditch. The gerbils eyes are great for seeing predators from above like birds.
