My gerbil tanks are in my living room. I have one gerbil, Annie (the black and white one in my sig) who sits and stares at me. I mean stares! For like 15 minutes she will just gawk at me. I know why I look at them...cause they're cute...but why does Annie stare at me? I'm not really annoyed by it or anything, I just want to know why.

Why Annie does it? I wouldn't know! I know that when a Mongolian gerbil is afraid it sits straight up, as frozen, with it front paws together like praying. Is it like that? However, 15 minutes is long! Maybe he likes watching you? ;D

She's not really standing straight up. More like hunched, sometimes she rests her front end on the rock in the sand and uses that as a good vantage point to begin her staring. heather

Is she definitely staring at you ? Or is she staring into space and dreaming, and you just happen to be in her line of vision . if you move, does she follow what you're doing with her eyes or maybe her whole head ? Maybe as she's on her own,she is watching you because you are the available company, even though you are not in her cage. Lydia

She's not alone in there, she's got plenty of company. Yes, she does follow me with her whole head, she will twist around to follow me. She's also the one who bobs her head at me. If I do it to her, she bobs back. It's really very cute.

I dont think you should be too worried about this whole staring thing, looks like she is just checking you out I do like the looks of the desert backing on your tanks they look great ! thats just what we need for the cheesmans and bushy tailed jirds - make them feel at home, even though i know they have never seen the desert to know what it is - its just nicer for us to think we're giving as natural a habitat as possible.

Like their set up Hether. It looks from your pic as if Annie's friend had a look as well, but couldn't keep it up as long as Annie,so started to wander off........ . Bless her, she's (Annie) really sweet. Lydia

ha that would annoy the hell out of me.
Does she twitch or seem frozen at all? When my gerbil was alone for a month she used to do those seizure things and just freeze hunched over with her paws up. Sometimes her face would twitch a little. If I banged the side of the tank she'd snap out of it though. Hasn't done it in over a year. But it was just weird.

Hey Birch, I bet she is looking at you expecting some thing. We train them like they train us. She probalby associates you with feeding and playing. Maybe she is staring at you in anticipation of a treat or play time. We give our dogs a treat when they come in for the night. Well lets just say if we forget to give them one, they let us know . Makes you wonder who trains who! LOL

I'll bet that's what it is, like a gerbil trance. "wow.....look at that on the couch!!! why isn't it bringing me treats?" Thanks! heather
