Hello members,
I have a DEH about 3-4 months old and I am trying to introduce him to a little nutmeg about 10-12 weeks. It has been day 2 and I have been swapping bedding and cages but there has been no sucess yet. They do not sleep near each other and he lunges at the nutmeg.
Could it be that he has been with the other two older males for a month and is used to that? Will he be harder to introduce to another gerbil since he is used to the older males? Any suggestions on how to assist with the transition?
I really value and appreciate your feedback. Thanks.

I usually put a smaller, wire cage into a larger aquarium. The dominant gerbil goes into the little cage, and the other gerbil in the aquarium. That way they can smell each other through the bars. I'll leave them at least 2 wks that way. I may switch them at times or mix up the bedding also. It works well for me, but I have had the stubborn lone female gerbil who simply wants to be alone...and nothing works for her.

Don't worry Sweetie, it is only the second day. Give it some more time, and I'm sure their behaviour will get better. Good luck!

Update: Success. I put them into a big tub with a fenced divider. I changed them several times a day. They were in the Hartz cages with connected but divided tubing. After putting them into the big tub I swapped the gerbils several times a day and today.........well, lets just say I put on the gloves for nothing . Thanks for your support. It certainly helped me keep my chin up and the faith I needed.
