Since I lost Sandy, even though, nothing can replace her, I am thinking about "rescuing" another little gerbil from the pet store. Rody and Burkie are both no more than 3 months old or so, but would it work to introduce a little baby gerbil to them?

I wouldn't do it, RyanF. Three months is really past the age where they will accept each other easily. Even if they get along in the meantime, the introduction of a new one now, may result in fights later. (edited because I mis-typed)

There is a little dark eyed honey (well 2 of them and a black one) that I am thinking about getting. Rody and Burkie are no older than 3-4 months and the baby at pet store looks about 6-7 weeks. Should I do it?

I just realized that I mis-typed something. I meant that I *wouldn't* do it. I think that Rody and Burkie are bonded now and won't accept another mate.

GERBILITIS HAS TAKEN ME AWAY!! I bought 3 little baby gerils today, 2 dark eyed honeys and 1 black. THE INTRO WAS VERY INTERESTING! Rody and Burkie are not too thrilled about it but Rody was chasing around the babies to check them out with a few scrapings here and there. The only injury was when 2 of the babies were wanting the same sleeping spot and there was a real fight. I think they were just stressed and lost their tempers at each other. The 4 second fight made the baby black one have a injury close to her butt and tail. Overall it is going OK. I will post pictures ASAP.

K. I'm confused. So how many gerbils do you now have together? 6?

ughh you had to mention dark eyed honey. The petshop where I like getting gerbils from cause they're babies and healthy and taken care of.. had a litter of those.
I've been avoiding going back there. But my plan is if I go back and there is only one, it's going in with my agouti and nutmeg. lol.

Okay. Here is the story. The whole reason I got these new 3 is because my poor little Sandy died 4 days ago. I went to the petstore just to see the babies and grew attached to them and they just had to come home in my eyes. Right now the 3 babies are in one house and the original 2 in another.

Ok so Rody and Burkie are already clanned together. Then you got 3 new babies.
Dude just keep the original 2 together and the 3 new babies in a seperate cage. Don't have to try and clan them alltogether. Not the safest thing to do especially since the babies have already gotten hurt.
But if you keep them together..just make sure to watch them for a while and good luck.

i'd definitely say keep them seperate unless you want more dead gerbils.

So...you have five females together now? That's not a good idea. Even if they tolerate eachother for now, you're almost gauranteed declanning later on. I suggest seperating them...so that two are in one cage and three are in the other, unless you want more injuries and a possible death. Not only did you introduce multiple gerbils to an already established clan (which is a no-no), you have five FEMALES together which is a bad idea as well. I'm sorry to hear about Sandy she was a beautiful gerbil.

Currently, they are all in the same house but there are little fights here and there. I will split them up as soon as I can get a tank from Wal-Mart. No more expensive plastic cages for me.

Ryan,
You are right about no more plastic cages. They are expensive and really don't work well for the gerbils. I agree with the others, separtate the 2 original in one cage and keep the 3 together in a different tank. I got a 94 quart plastic tub from WalMart for $8.99. It is big and long. I cut a hole in the lid and fenced it. I put in a water bottle and a food dish with the usual Aspen bedding, cardboard, toilet paper, etc. It gives 2 gerbils more space than a 20 gallon and it is cheaper. I am sure it would give the 3 gerbils plenty of space and they would be stress free.
Congratulations on the 3 baby girls. I am sure you and the gerbils will have a great time together.
