I took the divider out today for Gerbster and Honey, two females. Gerbster kept chasing Honey around, but there was no ball fighting. Gerbster would stand up really high on all 4 feet and push her body against Honey. Gerbster was also thumping a lot. I ended up putting the divider back in because after 3 hours, they still couldn't look at each other without chasing and bumping each other around.

They probably aren't quite ready. I'd give them a few more days and try again.

Yeah they're probably not ready. Despite the chasing though, that's actually not bad. 3 hours and chasing without ball fights is somewhat of a good sign. I've had instant ball fights after splitting.

I agree. It is a good sign that there have been no ball fights. Like Queenie said a few more days of split caging and swapping sides should do it!

I really have to wonder about the "standing really high on all 4 feet" thing. My gerbils did that earlier when they were introduced. I wonder if it's sort of like cats? Trying to look bigger and more threatening or something.

I should imagine so after all even humans do it!!! (on two feet usually)

When I introduced my black female with my neutered male, I saw that behaviour a lot (back arching). He had just been neutered and it seemed like she was stressing him out, so I re-split them. Unfortunately, they haven't grown out of this behaviour (these are the gerbs I was wondering whether I should split or not). Everytime she runs into him, he arches his back and pushes her away. I hope your gerbs will get better with time, though!

I think every situation with two gerbs is different..
Mine are being seriously confusing. They ran around for hours mating today, after being introduced just yesterday! Then after all this mating and snuggling, they start doing the back-arching thing again and scuffling. Then back to the mating.
It's so weird.

Heck, I've had couples that never got along well, and scuffles would break out all the time even after being together for months. Usually the female was giving him sass. Amazing how much like humans gerbils can be.
