Hi everyone,
I'm delighted to have found this message board, it's great to know there are so many other gerbils fans out there. My name is Simcoe and in September I adopted 2 gerbs, Bucky and Ginger. I had always thought that gerbils were relatively quiet animals, but my two girls sound like little baby birds, always peeping and crying when they nuzzle in the nest, or want to be groomed, or try to steal each other's snacks. At first I thought one of them was hurting the other, but they seem very tender towards one another and their play-fighting is always very gentle. I think maybe my girls are just a couple of crybabies!
Does anyone else in this forum have "peeping" gerbils like mine?

Simcoe you hit on the head all gerbils 'chatter' but young gerbils have lower pitched voices which we can hear. adult gerbils are much higher pitched and out of human range. Some pups are bigger cry babies than others too and some weaned pups we dont hear, tohers seem to cry all the time. don't worry as they mature it will settle down

Wow, thanks! I had no idea that the pitch of their voices would change with age. To tell the truth, I think I'll miss the peeping when it's gone -- it's sweet to hear them chirping away while I work in the other room. I better appreciate it while it lasts.

My gerbies chatter too! Its so funny! Also, they chirp at me when I give them their favourite toy, a string with a clip on it! They gnaw and chirp and gnaw a bit more! I love it!

Hello Sim,
Welcome to the Forum. It is a great place to share and exchange info, ideas and experiences.
I have 8 gerbils and recently five 3day old pups. My adult gerbils are relatively quiet and have been since I got them (10 weeks old) except Honeymunch. He is a chronic squeaker. The pups are really loud. I had to go check them 3 times last night. They where shrieking like some one was stepping on them!! It was so loud and long, it gave me the chills.
I think that some gerbils are just more vocal and have different ranges like humans do. Maybe you'll be lucky and yours will continue to be audible!!

wierd my pallids have never made any audible noise!!!! Thats a shame they sound really funny.. ;D Maybe its cos ours are really young, they are just 6 weeks and are still quite small. They like to play fight a lot still and run around like mad things in the morning making this funny polystyrene rubbing together noise.. Andrea

Mine squeak a lot when they're moving around each other and one is sleeping. Sometimes I can push my finger between them and they start squeaking. Every once in a while Timmy will squeak if I have my fingers around his mid-section just right, or pick him up off my shoulders.
