Hello. I know they thump when theres danger to warn others. But this morning my gerbil started thumping for no reason, that I could see, and did it constantly for about 3 -4 minutes. Was weird. I was laying in bed when he started to do it. There was nothing that could have scared him, I was laying there still and no one else was in the room. There wasn't any sudden movements or noises. I got up to see him and he stopped, then when I went back to bed he started again...but not as loud or for as long. So whats going on?

Hey Alley, Who is in the tank with him? If it is a girl, she could be in heat. They do that often during the mating ritual. Also if it was a boy, then maybe the "roomie" aggravated him. If not, it may be something he could hear from outside like the wind or another animal. I know my dog Tank goes crazy whining some times and i can't figure it out. Now I know it's because he can hear the gerbils squeeking and I can't. Never underestimate your animals. Just because you can't hear it or see it, does not mean it does not exist.

How about sudden shadows? That can do it too sometimes.
