My boyfriend and I had a pair of gerbils (he currently has custody). Last night, he had to put down Little Lady, [the one we thought was female]. He walked in and found Mister Man [the one we thought was male] eating her. But she wasn't dead. She was in shock or in a coma and obviously not doing well, but he says when he poked one of her forelegs, she pretty much flipped over and was moving when he tried to put her down. There was no sign of fighting. This couple made fast friends when they were first introduced and had been together for a year to a year and a half now with no problems. We think that they were about 2 years old.
My boyfriend is totally in mourning and now that he's removed the body, Mister Man seems to be in mourning, too. He's moping like crazy, not acting like his old self, but seems healthy enough.
Okay, so a few things:
Why would Mister Man be eating Little Lady if she was still alive? What could have gone wrong with her health that my boyfriend wouldn't have immediately noticed? He said her coat was a little less shiny and she was thin [but she's always been a little thin] but she had been bouncy and healthy and eating well the day before. How long should we wait before getting Mister Man a new cagemate?
Also, when we bought them, we bought them from two different sources and the storepeople *told* us Little Lady was female and Mister Man was male. But they never produced a litter. [Which was fine by us.] With this information, should the new cagemate be one that we believe to be female?
Thank you very much for your time.
