I have noticed that all of my gerbils take the aspen bedding and shred it into little strings of bedding. Then they carry it over to where they sleep and use it to sleep on. It looks really cool! Does anyone else notice this same behavior with thier gerbils? Also is there some sort of explanation for this?

Yes I have! This way they can make very soft nesting material. They do it also with their hay!

None of my gerbils did that until this last pair I got. They gather all the aspen in the area, shred it to fine shreds, and pile in their cozy bed along with tissues and timothy hay, leaving only the corncob behind. The best nest builders of all my clans ;D

Mine also shred the big chips of Aspen. It is interesting to see how different clans prepare thier environment. The girls are the most elaborate and creative of my bunch. They work great together and seem to be on the same wave length.

Yes, mine are females also, and they do have the best nests. They are so well built! sometimes, I can't even find my gerbils because they are burried in their nest.
